When, after Korogocho, I chose to come and live in Naples, I could never have guessed that I would end up fighting the very same battles.

Sono passato dalla discarica di Nairobi, a fianco della baraccopoli di Korogocho alle lotte di Napoli contro le discariche e gli inceneritori

I came from the Nairobi rubbish dump, situated next to the Korogocho squatter camp, to find the battle being waged by Naples against the rubbish dumps and the incinerators.

Sono convinto che Napoli è solo la punta dell’iceberg di un problema che ci sommerge tutti.

I firmly believe that Naples is but the tip of the iceberg, a problem that is about to smother us all.

Infatti, se a questo mondo, gli oltre sei miliardi di esseri umani vivessero come viviamo noi ricchi (l’11% del mondo consuma l’88% delle risorse del pianeta!) avremmo bisogno di altri quattro pianeti come risorse e di altro quattro come discariche ove buttare i nostri rifiuti.

In fact, if everyone on this planet, more than six billion human beings in all, were to live like us rich people (11% of the world’s population consumes 88% of all the planet’s resources!) we would need the equivalent of another four such planets’ worth of resources, plus another four such planets’ worth of rubbish dumps on which to dispose of our refuse.

I poveri di Korogocho, che vivono sulla discarica, mi hanno insegnato a riciclare tutto, a riusare tutto, a riparare tutto, a rivendere tutto, ma soprattutto a vivere con sobrietà.

The poor people of Korogocho, who live virtually on top of the rubbish dumps, taught me a valuable lesson on how to recycle everything, how to re-utilise everything, how to repair everything, how to re-sell everything and, above all, how to live in a restrained manner.

E’ stata una grande lezione che mi aiuta oggi a leggere la situazione dei rifiuti a Napoli e in Campania, regione ridotta da vent’anni a sversatoio nazionale dei rifiuti tossici.

It was a great lesson that still today helps enable me to read the current situation as regards the refuse situation in Naples and Campania, a region that, over the past twenty years, has literally become a national dumping ground for all sorts of toxic waste.

Infatti esponenti della camorra in combutta con logge massoniche coperte e politici locali, avevano deciso nel 1989, nel ristorante "La Taverna" di "Villaricca", di sversare i rifiuti tossici in Campania.

As a matter of fact, certain members of the Camorra, in conjunction with certain secret Masonic lodges and local politicians, had already decided that they would dump toxic waste in Campania, back in 1989 in the "La Taverna" restaurant in"Villaricca".

Thousands of articulated trucks arrived from all over Italy, loaded to the hilt with toxic waste, which was then buried by the Camorra in the Triangle of death (Acerra-Nola- Marigliano), in the "Terre dei fuochi" area (North of Naples) and in the countryside of the Casertano area.

Over a period of 15 years, these Special Commissioners have spent more than two billion Euro on the production of more than seven million tons of so-called "eco-bales", which in reality have nothing to do with anything remotely "eco"” in nature.

Ne è prova il fatto che Prodi, a governo scaduto, abbia firmato due ordinanze: una che permetteva di bruciare le ecoballe di Giugliano nell’inceneritore di Acerra, l’altra che permetteva di dare il Cip 6 (la bolletta che paghiamo all’Enel per le energie rinnovabili) ai 3 inceneritori della Campania che "trasformano la merda in oro - come dice Guido Viale - Quanto più merda, tanto più oro!".

Nor does the proof lie in the fact that, upon the collapse of his most recent government, Prodi proceeded to sign two provisions: one authorising the burning of the Giugliano eco-bales in the incinerator at Acerra, while the second authorised the transfer of "Cip 6" funds (additional charges levied on our Enel utility bills supposedly to help finance the development of renewable energy sources) to the 3 incinerators in Campania that "convert shit into gold " as stated by Guido Viale - The more shit there is, the more gold we can make!".
