Hi, my name is Elaine. I’m an American of Italian descent, born in New York.

I have a degree in Education from St. John’s University in NY, and  taught in my native city, until I visited Italy with my parents and there I met the man who was to become my husband. I’ve been living here in Italy (precisely Almese in the province of Turin) for the past 32 years and teaching English for all that time! (courses for local communities as well as private lessons).

As a conversation teacher for two local high schools, I was able to see the methods used to teach English. What I’d like to do is to present some teaching suggestions to those English teachers who have the desire to “perk-up” their lessons!

It really isn’t all that time-consuming to prepare lessons that stimulate the students and start them on the road to conversing in English. Once the preparation work is done, it can be filed away and re-used the following semester.

Let’s start out with ORGANIZATION.

If you want your students to learn, the first thing I suggest doing is get them ORGANIZED! It sounds rather obvious, but when I noticed students with textbooks overflowing with scraps of notes on little pieces of paper, well, I just couldn’t resist and I had them going out and buying a loose-leaf binder and a pack of plastic page covers.

They then made up a series of  DIVIDERS so that the days of scrap paper notes would be gone forever! The main divisions are :

1.  GRAMMAR
2.  CONVERSATION
3.  DICTATION
4.  EXPRESSIONS
5.  DIALOGUES
6.  VERB LISTS
7.  ARTICLES
8.  HOLIDAYS

Others can be added later on.

When the students take notes or do special class assignments, they immediately classify them under the right category, so they can be easily found when needed.

If  photocopies are used to simplify the Grammar notions, I suggest that they be numbered. This goes too for Conversation pages (Ex… Shopping, Asking directions, Travelling, etc.)

I’d like to make note here that it would be helpful if students could use small English dictionaries in class. Since you will have them writing up questions and dialogues on their own, they will definitely need a hand in the spelling of the words they want to use.

I don’t believe correcting the spelling of a word, orally. It can lead to errors. It’s my opinion that the more a student is accustomed  to using a dictionary the better he will become in writing skills. My motto is “Seeing is... remembering.”

My dear teachers, this is only the beginning of our working together to aid our students and gain great satisfaction from doing it. I hope to hear from you personally, as I welcome any comments you may have.

Next time I’m  going to talk about the use of visual aids in the classroom. Before I leave you, I’d like to begin giving you some Nice Thoughts to share with your students.

This is my favourite:

"Learn a new language,
Get a new soul."
