What is the
definition of a Slogan?
A slogan is a phrase expressing the aim or
nature of an organization or enterprise. It is an easily
remembered and frequently repeated phrase used in advertising or
promotion.
It is interesting to note that this word is taken
from the Scottish-Gaelic word, “slaugh” meaning “army” and
“shout”, since the first slogans were actually battle cries!
Without a doubt, your students are already aware
of the numerous slogans they see constantly while watching TV.
Have them make note of those that are in English.
Some examples:
KIA car…………………………………The power to surprise.
BROSWAY JEWELLERY………… About you.
LIPTON TEA…………………………..Drink Positive.
PEUGEOT car………………………. Motion and Emotion
These are just a few of them. Your students will
surely find many more. They can also look up magazine
advertisements and find slogans in English. They can cut them
out and put them in plastic folders for a class book on Slogans.
Here are some I found in my magazines:
NOKIA…………………………………… Connecting People
NIKE ………………………………………Just Do It!!
LG…………………………………………..Life’s Good.
Finally the students can
create their own “personal slogan”. The teacher makes up one
too! Mine is, “Always Active!” Later in the year
they can notice the slogans used for the American
Presidential Campaigns.
A Nice Thought.
“The best slogan is short and to the point.”
