When it's time for a vacation, we
think of fantastic places to visit. One really fantastic place
is Hawaii.
Hawaii became the 5oth state of the USA in
1959. It's the only state made up of islands and its the only
state not geographically located in North America. It is an
archipelago situated in the central Pacific Ocean, approximately
3,200 kilometers southwest of the North American mainland.
The capital, Honolulu, is located on the
island of Oahu. The islands that make up the state of Hawaii
are:
Kaui Maui Kaloolawe Lanai Nihau
Molokai Oahu, and Hawaii, the big island.
Who wouldn't like to take a super vacation
in Hawaii?
Let the students do some travel "dreaming"
and plan their trip.
1. they can make a list of
the things to pack:
swimsuit shorts tops
t-shirts jeans sandals sneakers
flip-flops beach towels …
2. they can list things to
do while they are there
swim surf sail sightsee
3. they can list places to
see in Oahu
Visit a pineapple
plantation Polynesian Cultural Center
Sea Life
Park USS Arizona Memorial
Waimea Canyon
Diamond Head volcano
Pearl
Harbor Wakiki Beach
4. they may be interested
in seeing what courses are available at the University of Hawaii.
The students will need the help of
Internet to gather the necessary information.
The class can be divided into groups.
One group can look up flights from New
York and California and the plane fare. They can notice how
long it takes to arrive in Hawaii from both states.
Another group can find a hotel, giving
its location, rates, services, etc.
Why not elaborate the project and include
some Hawaiian words.
Aloha, (hello, goodbye) a
ukulele (a musical instrument)
a lei (a flower necklace) a
luau (Hawaiian barbecue)
Mahalo (thank you)
I once gave a lesson on Hawaii and it
turned out to be a real celebration. We listened to Hawaiian
songs, tasted a pineapple cake, drank pineapple juice and the
students even made Hawaiian "leis" with crepe paper flowers. Of
course it all depends on the time one can dedicate to the
project, but I must say if there IS time, it's an extremely
enjoyable lesson!
