We must admit that we all like to receive
compliments. Let’s teach our students how to make a
compliment.
First start making a list on the blackboard of the
things we generally compliment a person about.
It can include what a student is wearing:
shirt, jacket, blouse, earrings,
pullover, T-shirt, jeans,
sweater, skirt, pendant, etc.
It can also regard a student’s appearance:
Haircut or hairdo, eyes, smile,
hands, voice, etc.
Then give them a photocopy of ways to make a
compliment.
Ex: You look nice in that
……..(sweater, t-shirt, etc.)
What a nice ……..(pullover,
jacket, etc.)
I like your ………( voice,
hairdo)
I like ………… the way you
smile.
………… the way you are always ready
to help someone.
………… the way you write.
………… the way you tell jokes.
You can also give a compliment, in general.
Ex: How nice you look today!
You look terrific today!
You look good in everything you wear!
That colour becomes you!
Now we can concentrate on responses to a
compliment.
Ex. Oh, thanks.
How nice of you to notice!
Thanks for the compliment!
Thanks, I didn’t think you noticed!
You made my day!
You’re embarrassing me!
It’s best to have them work in small groups.
One student makes a compliment and the other answers, until
everyone gets a chance. Generally during this activity everyone
starts laughing. It seems that rarely they would think of
complimenting their classmates! However, once they see how easy
it is to be complimentary, who knows - they just might continue
doing it on their own. After all, everyone likes to get a
compliment!
A Nice Thought
“A compliment is verbal sunshine.”
