It’s amazing how many
expressions we have in the English language. I’d like to
introduce the students to expressions they may come across when
they read articles written in English.
I particularly like expressions that we use with Colours.
Here are just a few to look up the meanings of.
To come off with flying colours
To be tickled pink
To feel blue
To be green with envy
To tell a white lie
To be in the red
To see red
To turn red
To be yellow
To be the black sheep in the family
To blackmail someone
To be in black and white
We also have a
number of expressions that we use with Animals
To lead a dog’s life
To be dog eared
To let the cat out of the bag
To be chicken
To have the lion’s share
To be a snake in the grass
To have a memory like an elephant
To feel like a fish out of water
To be foxy
To have a bird’s eye view
To put the cart before the horse
To get off your high horse
The students
can form a list of those expressions with FOOD, MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS, etc. They can add to them from time to time.
