In order to “spice up” your students’
vocabulary, I suggest you help them discover as many new
adjectives as they can. Some suggestions:
1) Using a magazine article, they can underline all the
adjectives they can find. They can keep them on an Adjective
List for future reference. This Adjective List can be
divided into categories;
Adjectives to describe...
• people
• objects
• places
• emotions
2) Another method is to have them write at least 4 adjectives
for each of the following headings:
Adjectives to describe...
My parents • My best friend • My pet
My room • My school • My favourite teacher
My car • My town • My house
My sofa • My computer • My favourite actor
Tell the students not to be repetitive, and try to find
adjectives that are appropriate to each heading.
3) Give the students a “paper T-shirt” (preferably
coloured!) and have them write all the adjectives that describe
themselves. These too can be posted around the room for all to
enjoy.
4) Have them listen to different types of music. They can
divide a sheet of paper into 4 parts each with a heading:
• Classical • Country • Jazz • Modern
After listening to a song, they can write down all the
adjectives that “describe” the piece. Again trying to vary as
much as possible the adjectives. For this experience they will
surely need to have their dictionary to refer to.
5) This time have them observe famous paintings, (here
Internet is a help) choosing a variety from artists of different
art forms. Again they must write the adjectives that they feel
“describe” the painting.
6) To help them recall as many adjectives as possible, have them
form a list of:
Adjective opposites...
Timid
Outgoing
Polite
Rude
Quiet
Noisy
Heavy
Light
Painful
Painless
Comfortable
Uncomfortable
6) It would also be useful to form adjectives with their
prefixes:
• Un……unusual, unattractive, unimportant
• Dis……disinterested, dishonest, discouraged
• Im…….impolite, impatient, improper
Also with suffixes:
• ..ful----helpful, grateful, useful
• ..less---worthless, hopeless, meaningless
These lists can be composed by groups of students while the
teacher is working with her group.
When writing dialogues independently, remind them that
adjectives will definitely add more interest to their work.
