I'm
sure everyone at one point in their life sat down to write a
poem.
The
definition of a poem: a verbal composition designed to convey
experiences, ideas or emotion al in a vivid imaginative way.
One can start with the rhyming poem.
A little madness in the Spring
is wholesome even for a king!
Emily Dickenson
Free verse poems have no rhyme but they are still an artistic
expression. People believe it to be a modern form of poetry,
but it is a form that has been around for hundreds of years.
I
particularly like his poem by Carl Sandburg
The Fog
The
fog comes in on little cat feet
It
sits looking over harbour and city
On
silent haunches and then moves on.
To
write free verse it's advisable to review the various poetic
techniques.
Alliteration...when two or more words in a poem begin with the
same letter
Ex. Dancing daisies
Onomatopoeia...is an imitation of a sound in words.
Ex. Zip, Bang Click
Personification...inanimate objects are endowed with human
qualities.
Ex. The flowers were dancing in the
moonlight
Let
the students try their hand at writing some free verse. It's
wise to give them some simple examples to read before they start
working on their own.
The
teacher can also suggest some topics for them to write about:
A summer evening A favourite animal
A flower garden A day at school
A sportsman A classmate
A Nice
Thought
"All
good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings".
William
Wordsworth
