The
English language has a lot of expressions and many times we find
that there is more than one way of saying something.
Let's take
these expressions:
Why
don't we...
What about...?
How about...?
"Why
don't we..." is followed immediately by a verb.
Why don't we...take a ride?
...play tennis?
...go out to dinner at that new
Japanese restaurant?
"What
about..." is followed by the gerund form of the verb.
What about...going to a museum?
...buying a new CD?
...listening to the radio?
"How about..." is also followed by the gerund form of a verb.
How about...going shopping?
...having a pizza?
...watching T.V.?
All
of these questions are actually giving a suggestion about
doing something.
Here
is how we can answer these questions:
"Fine!"
"O.K.!"
"Good idea!"
"Why didn't I think of that?
"Sure!"
"Great, let's invite some friends too!"
"Why not?"
"No, I'm busy!"
"You get the craziest ideas!"
"Sorry, but I'm too tired."
"Again!?"
"Sorry, I'm not free this afternoon" "Maybe
next time."
The
students can make up "suggestions" and then use them in a "question-answer" circle. They can even find some other ways
to accept of refuse a suggestion. Let them be creative!
