Should I encourage
enrollment of my students in an English course abroad?
In my opinion...it depends.
Primarily, it depends on
how much the students already know in English.. If the students
are only beginning to study, I'd say that it's a bit too early.
The reason behind this advice is simple. Before they can arrive
at an acceptable level of comprehension , the course is over.
The time element is very important. If they only have morning
classes, the time dedicated to learning the basic grammar is
very limited. It's true they are surrounded by the language, and
that is a good point, but this full immersion is often too much
for a student, especially if we're talking about young students.
I prefer it if the student
has already a good grammar basis in English and some practice in
using it conversationally. The course can then be an aide for
the student because they can immediately attempt daily
conversation and also have the opportunity to use it while
being in the English speaking country.
Since these English courses
abroad are quite expensive it's a good idea, as a teacher, to
evaluate the program and the benefits it can have for your
students.
Too often the organizers of
these English abroad programs are very insistent and tend to try
to convince the teachers of the value of their courses.
I'd do some investigating
about their programs before I recommend them to the parents.
1...see if the courses are authorized and recognized by a
noted educational institution.
2...inquire as to exactly how many lesson hours are in the
entire course.
3...find out how many students there are in each course.
4...ake sure you know if there is individual help available for
students who need it.
5...are the "free" time outings accompanied by an adult teacher.
6...talk to someone who actually took the courses and get their
opinion.
The idea of learning
English in a fantastic English-speaking city is very alluring to
both the students and their parents. Just be aware of the facts
before you recommend. What we want is that the students can
benefit from this learning experience.
