We should try to remember that “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”, and so we can’t expect our students to learn English overnight. The main thing is to set goals that are appropriate for your class level. A beginners’ group has to begin with the fundamental grammar rules, so they can become independent learners. In other words, they understand what they are doing. It’s best not to have the students memorize phrases without understanding how they were made. How many people who are studying English for the first time, learn, How are you? What’s your name? How old are you?, without a basic knowledge of the grammar used. Many could not transform these sentences to regard other persons.
Ex. How are
you? How is she? How is he? How are they? Once a certain grammar point is explained it should be used immediately. Role playing is very helpful in this beginning phase.
Ex. Two
people meet each other after a number of years. It’s up to the teacher to plan a few of these situations (no work goes to waste as the teacher can use it again in future classes!) This informal method of conversation is very valuable. It lets the students experiment with the language and motivates them since they see they can be capable even at this early stage, of communicating in English. This goal is primary when teaching English. We want our students to begin talking as soon as possible. When they discover they can express themselves in English, they need the “tools” to continue. Vocabulary words and especially verbs, are necessary. I like to teach the “basic” verbs first To go to work to study to live to want to give etc. I make up photocopies with these verbs. Infinitive past tense Past participle (used with “has” and “have”) To go went gone Then I like to add some immediate vocabulary so they can make up sentences and questions
Ex. To
go
They can then form
simple sentences using the vocabulary “aids” with the verb.
Ex. I go
to the country with my family. They have an enormous possibility to “create” sentences and questions using this easy method.
