You wouldn’t believe how many verbs and
expressions are used with the parts of a body. This brings to
mind the following “joke”.
"If you go
to a restaurant where they wait on you Hand and Foot, you
probably have to pay an Arm and a Leg!!!"
Here the expression to wait on someone Hand
and Foot, means to be served extremely well. While
paying an Arm and a Leg, means you have to pay an exorbitant
price. Who would have guessed that the parts of a body could be
used for these expressions!!!
Here is a list of some of the verbs used when
talking about your Body
To bend your arm\leg to get a
cramp in your leg
To kneel to flex your
muscles
To stretch to get a neck
whipping
To tickle to cross
your legs
To scratch to skin your
knee
Here are some for talking about Fingers and
Toes.
To tip-toe to
stub your toe
To crack your knuckles to snap your fingers
To wiggle your toes to bite your
fingernails
These are about Eyes.
To blink
to stare
To squint to glare
To tear to wink
To be colour blind to shut your eyes
These are about your Nose.
To smell to
sniff
To inhale to
exhale
To sneeze to blow one’s nose
These are about your Mouth.
To
taste to nibble
To whistle to whisper
To cough to swallow
To lick to shout
To spit to bite your
tongue
To stutter to hiccup
To chew to gargle
These are of course just a few. Perhaps the
students can do some research to find others.
I also suggest a class project where the students
find photos from magazines that illustrate some of the above
verbs. They can be collected and put into a notebook binder to
be used for class reference.
A Nice Thought
“The chief function of the body is to carry
the brain around.”
