Questo blog in inglese è un'iniziativa di

didattica innovativa e di come rendere lo studio dell'inglese sempre più
piacevole, motivante ed efficace. Il pronunciatore di inglese ReadSpeaker

First, they all needed a review of the basic grammar to feel more confident. I found they remembered quite a bit from their English classes, but unfortunately they all told me that they practically never had conversation practice in class. When they enter the University many of them have to take an entrance exam in English. This is something that really disturbs them because there is a section on oral communication. Apart from having to describe a photo, they need to talk about a given subject. (I already gave you the different ways to start describing a photo in my Article 32.) Here are some of topics they come across: Talk about the person you admire most. The main problem is that the student has only a few minutes to organize his thoughts and then he has to speak for two minutes on the subject. Generally the student panics because he can’t think of anything to say. Let’s take the topic…the most important day in your life. Here is where I tell them not to worry about saying something true, INVENT something. It’s much easier to invent a story than to sit there trying to think of something that refers to you, especially if you have only a couple of minutes at your disposal! Inventing is the best way because there’s the possibility to prepare some answers in advance. Many of these topics on the exams are repetitive. So the student can take advantage of this fact. The teacher’s role here is to help her students practice answering similar topics, encouraging them to make use of expressions when they speak. It’s also important to tell them to give as much information as possible, and to keep the sentences simple. Example:
All it comes down to is practice, practice and practice. The more the students speak the less tense they become when having to face an exam of this kind. The topics chosen can be very varied so the teacher should stimulate them as much as possible by proposing not only topics but sample answers as well. Finally, they need a chance to try them out. The teacher is to be supportive and encouraging. This can be a challenge for the students as well as for the teacher, but it also brings with it a great satisfaction. A Nice Thought “The world is before you, and you need
not take it or leave it as it was when you came in.”
