Let’s continue our discussion on visual aids.
Last time, we spoke about using magazine photos. This time let’s
continue talking about magazines and their use. It’s time to
collect some English articles. An ideal source is the English
4Life magazines from
www.englishgratis.com
The articles can be used in various ways:
-
the
students can do an “Adjective Hunt”.
Underlining all the adjectives used in the articles and then
writing them on a list to keep for future reference.
-
Apart
from adjectives it’s valuable to hunt for Verbs too.
This time, when they write their list, it is advisable to
write the verb’s ID. For example: to work
Past: worked • Past Participle:
worked • Gerund: working
This Verb ID is sufficient for forming all the tenses in
English.
-
The
article can be transformed into a dialogue, using questions
and answers.
-
For
more advanced students, the article can be summarized.
As for
other visual aids:
1) You can put together a set of Answer
Cards.
On strips of cardboard (preferably coloured) write down simple
answers so the students have to make up the appropriate
question. Examples:
It’s red. • What colour is your car?
Yes, I’m a student. • Are you a student?
She lives in Turin. • Where does she
live? etc.
2) You can use cardboard strips (this time in a different
colour!) to form a set of Conversation
Starters. Examples:
I went shopping.
The students have to ask questions to find out more information.
When did you go shopping?
Who did you go with?
What did you buy? etc.
Some other starters can be:
I saw a good movie.
I have a sister.
My son goes to school.
I have a pet.
My mother is American. Etc.
3) If you’d like a good way to review grammar, prepare
Sentence Strips.
On each strip ( yes, in another colour!) write a simple sentence
and the student has to change the tense or put the sentence into
a question form in other tenses, or change the sentence into the
negative form etc. Examples:
Mary lives in Rome.
Mary doesn’t live in Rome
Mary will live in Rome.
Will Mary live in Rome?
Did Mary live in Rome? Etc.
Next time we’ll talk about ways to stimulate conversation.
Here is another Nice Thought:
“A problem is a chance for you to do your best.”
Duke Ellington
I hope to read your comments, so please write!
