As we know the Italian language (or any other
language for that matter!) cannot be translated literally into
English.
The expressions that often cause problems are
those using “to be” and “to have”.
All of the following expressions are translated
with “essere” in Italian as well as in English.
To be happy to
be worried
To be sad to be sincere
To be late to be unlucky
To be early to be married
To be lucky to be
busy
To be angry
to be tired
The following list is translated with “avere” in
Italian but with “to be “ in English.
To be
hungry to be sleepy
To be thirsty to be
hot
To be right to be
cold
To be wrong to be
afraid
Of course, there are expressions in English
that use “to have”.
To have a
party to have no regrets
To have a good time to
have a funny feeling
To have an idea to
have time to
To have an opinion to
have no time to
To have patience with to
have a meal (breakfast, lunch etc.)
To have children to
have something to drink
To have a good\bad reputation to have cold
feet
To have faith in someone to have
a good\bad name
To have a cold
to have a headache
To have a concert\art exhibit
A good practice activity is to have the students
use these expressions in short dialogues.
If needed they can work in small groups. The
teacher can supply sample subjects that can be used.
Ex. Friends talking about a party.
Parents talking about a weekend trip.
Students talking about their class.
A person complaining about not feeling well.
A person inviting a friend out.
Once the written dialogues are corrected by the
teacher, the students can use them as an oral practice.
Remember the more a teacher can get her students to speak, the
better they will become at it.
Try not to be stressful when doing this sort of
oral work. The goal is to have the students feel “comfortable”
with the language.
If they are having problems with their
pronunciation, stimulate them to” record” themselves. The
teacher may want to first read their dialogues out loud, so they
can hear the proper pronunciation before they start recording.
Here I also suggest some “teacher” work. Record
short dialogues on different subjects. The students will have a
written copy of the dialogue to follow.
This can be helpful to those students who are a
bit shy … let them take the recording home. They might be more
tempted to try out and repeat the correct pronunciation if they
are alone!!
As the old saying goes, try not to leave any stone
unturned!! Try out all kinds of methods to help your students
and you will surely be rewarded.
