Sometimes the teacher has
difficulties in finding short articles in English that are
simple to understand.
Here is a sample article that can be used for creating a time
line.
John Lennon
John
Lennon was born on October 9th, 1940 in Liverpool,
England.
His father left the family when John was only two years
old. After he father left home, John went to live with his aunt,
as his mother had difficulties bringing him up.
In 1952, he entered Quarry Bank High School, but he was
more interested in music than in studying. In 1956, he
formed his first group, the Quarry Men, and one year later he
met Paul McCartney.
Soon after Paul had joined the Quarry Men, the group became the
Silver Beatles and then the Beatles. That was in 1960. That
same year, the Beatles toured Germany where they were very
successful. After their return to England in 1961, Brian
Epstein offered to manage the group.
In 1962, John married Cynthia Powell and the following
year their son Julian, was born.
In 1963, their first album was released and two years
later the Queen granted them the title of Baronets in
recognition of their international success.
John
married Yoko Ono in 1969. By that time John and the group
weren't getting along anymore.
Before
separating in 1970, the Beatles appeared for the last
time together in San Francisco, in 1966.
In
1976, John announced his retirement.
On
December 9th, 1980, John Lennon was shot dead.
As you
can see there is a lot of chronological information in this
article.
The students can use this information for forming a time line
of John Lennon's life.
1940……..John Lennon was born
1942……..his father left home
1952……..he entered Quarry Bank
High School
1956…….he formed his first
group, the Quarry Men.
It would
be interesting if they could do a time line for another singer
or actor etc.
This is a new way for them to gather information about a
person. They can also use these time lines for
formulating questions.
Ex. When was John Lennon born?
Did he live with his aunt?
What High School did he go to?
When did he meet Paul McCartney?
Another
creative activity can be having the students make up their
own time line, giving year of birth, when they started
school, etc
A Nice
Thought
"A
dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream
together is a reality."
