My mother had a favourite saying, “It’s
nice to be polite.”
Let’s not forget to teach our students these special words and
expressions.
Accepting help and thanking someone:
1. Thanks for lending me a hand.
2. Thanks so much. I really needed a hand.
3. Thanks for offering. I could use a bit of help.
4. I really appreciate your help.
5. It’s so nice of you to offer.
6. I’ll gratefully accept your help.
7. You’re so nice to help me out.
8. Thanks a million.
9. You’re an angel!
Also when refusing help we can add a polite word or two.
Refusing help, politely.
1. Thanks for offering but I’ll take care of it.
2. That’s very nice of you to offer but I can do it myself.
3. Thanks but it really isn’t necessary.
It’s a good idea to use as many polite words as possible in your
conversation.
One of my students has created his own formula while travelling.
He uses a lot of compliments.
“Sir, I hate to bother you, but could you help me please? I
adore your beautiful city but I can’t find this museum on the
street map, I heard it’s a fantastic place and I wouldn’t want
to miss it.” “Thank you so much. Everyone here is so
helpful.”
Marco always has a great time on his trips with no problems when
sightseeing. If he gets lost he just takes out his “polite”
expressions and adds a lot of compliments. He says they never
fail him.
A Nice Thought:
“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.”
