When teaching the conditional tenses in
English it can be fun to have your students do some “wishful
thinking”.
Ex. If I owned a Ferrari, I’d take Miss Italia for a
ride.
If I won the lottery, …..
If I were a famous author, …
If I lived in New York City…..
If I had a month’s vacation…
If I won a Nobel Prize…..
If I were a fashion designer….
If I owned a private jet…
If I had a million dollars……
All it takes is a bit of day-dreaming!!!
Another way of getting creative answers that are often humorous,
is to have the students continue these sentences:
If I were Tom Hanks, I’d…
If I were Dan Brown ……
If I were the Queen of England…
If I were Valentino Rossi…
If I were Paul McCartney….
If I were Superman ……
If I were Indiana Jones…
If I were Sharon Stone……
During a group lesson some students can prepare these “If I
were” sentences by adding noted personalities. Another
group can prepare sentences with”. “I would”
Ex: I would take a trip around the world.
I would live in a house next to Matt Damon.
I would write a book about Steve Jobs.
I would visit the Statue of Liberty. Etc.
The two groups can then exchange their work and appropriately
complete the sentences.
I’d advise you to photocopy the results so each student can have
a copy.
These activities can also be used to review
the other conditional forms.
Ex: If I study, I will pass the exam.
If I lived in New York City, I’d take
the subway to school.
If I had telephoned earlier, I would
have spoken to her.
Still another method: have the students answer these questions.
What would you do if you
…….lost your wallet?
I’d………
…….forgot your car keys?
I’d………
…….came late for class?
I’d………
…… missed the bus?
I’d………
…….forgot your mother’s birthday? I’d………
…….failed your English exam? I’d………
…….left your hat on the train?
I’d………
…….had no time for breakfast? I’d………
…….forgot your dentist appointment? I’d………
…….lost a library book?
I’d………
……couldn’t go to the party?
I’d………
It will surely surprise you to read what the students write. I
already used these activities in my class and the students were
extremely creative . In fact I had them write up the best ones
on coloured strips (naturally!) and we tacked them up on the
classroom bulletin board for all to see!
A Nice Thought:
“If we did all the things we are capable of doing,
we would literally astound ourselves.”
Thomas A. Edison
