Many words in English
have more than one meaning.
The meanings are
sometimes totally unrelated.
Here
are some words with different meanings
PLAY...I like to play
tennis.
...He can
play the piano very well.
...We saw a
great play last night.
TRAIN...I train daily to
keep fit.
...I hope I
don't miss my train.
BOOK...I'm reading a
good book.
...She
has to book her flight to Rome.
WATCH...My watch is 10
minutes slow.
...I'm
going to watch a film on TV tonight.
RING...He bought her a
beautiful ring.
...Don't ring the doorbell!
BALL...The children
played with the ball.
...The
princess met the prince at the ball.
TRIP...We took a trip to
Spain.
...He
tripped over the box of toys.
JAM...I love peach jam
on my toast.
...We got
caught in a traffic jam.
PARK...We live near a
lovely park.
...He parked
the car in the garage.
Using the above
words, have the students create their own sentences to show the
difference in meaning. Once corrected, the teacher can have
them typed up and photocopied for everyone in the class. There can be a page dedicated to each word.
They can even
research other words with more than one meaning to add to the
above list. They will notice that sometimes the word can be a
verb or else a noun.
