Here’s an activity that you can use with your
students to test their vocabulary knowledge.
1) Name 5 things
to eat for dessert.
1……… 2…….. 3…….
4…….. 5………
2) Name 2 places
to go when it’s a beautiful sunny Sunday.
3) Name 3
countries that you would like to visit.
4) Name 5 things
you can use when you are cooking.
5) Name 3 places
to go swimming in the summer.
6) Name 3 sports
you can practice in the winter.
7) Name 4 kinds of
fruit.
8) Name 5 kinds of
vegetables.
9) Name 3
different ways of cooking.
10) Name 4 words that
regard computers.
11) Name 2 of your
favourite school subjects.
12) Name 3 ways of
travelling in the city.
13) Name 5 kinds of
flowers.
14) Name 3 things you

-
Hand out a photocopy of above and leave spaces
for their answers.
-
It’s a good idea to tell them to first fill in
the things that they are sure of.
-
When they have difficulties or are unsure of the
spelling of a word, they can use their dictionaries.
This is only a sample of what can be asked. The
teacher can surely add many more to this list.
Another way to develop awareness of new vocabulary
words. Let the students “take a good look” around the room and
then make up a list of what they see.
Ex. A blackboard, 4 windows, the teacher’s desk...
They should try to include words like windowsills,
chalk, electrical outlets, etc.
When in difficulty, let them use their dictionaries. It’ll be
interesting to see who can find the most words or the most
unusual words.
If the teacher has a class of elementary students,
she can ask them to make up word cards to “label” the objects in
the classroom. “Seeing is... remembering”.
A Nice Thought:
“We think in generalities, but we live in
details.”
