The 11th of September 2001, will be a date that
goes down in American history as the most tragic of all days.
The World Trade Centre was a complex of seven building featuring
the Twin towers. It was located in the financial district in
Lower Manhattan.
The complex opened on April 4, 1973 and at that time the Twin
Towers were the tallest buildings in the world.
The Windows of the World Restaurant was located on the 106th
floor of the North Tower and Top of the World observation deck
was on the 107th floor of the South tower.
Weather permitting, visitors could take two short escalator
rides from the 107th floor up to the 110th floor to an outdoor
viewing platform at the height of 420 meters.
On a clear day, visitors could see up to 80 kilometres.
On September 11th, 2001, terrorists attacked
these two towers, causing them to collapse, leaving over 2,500
victims.
The reconstruction of the World Trade Centre is now well
underway.
Included among the buildings will the National
September 11th Memorial and Museum which opened on September
11, 2012.
The story of the Twin Towers will remain in our
memory for all time.
So many of our students have lived through this moment in
history. They personally viewed the films of the attack on the
towers and heard the heartbreaking stories of the few survivors.
It's only right for them to know some facts about these world famous
towers.
The Towers were designed by Minoura Yamaski
They were designed to look like a futuristic sculpture.
More than 10,000 workers were involved in building the complex.
The main elevators, with a 55-person capacity, reached the top
in less than a minute.
The Towers could be seen from at least 20 miles away.
Every President since 1973, paid a visit to this landmark.
I had the opportunity to visit the Twin towers
with my family in 1996. It was a fantastic experience for all
of us. I particularly was impressed by the 107th floor
observation deck. There it was possible to look out through
floor-to ceiling windows and view New York city from such a
height that the cars below looks like ants!
Who would have suspected that only 5 years later those towers
would have no longer existed!
