Evaluate, how we
evaluate!
Very often a teacher finds it difficult to
evaluate her students' capabilities. Another factor is that the test is generally timed. This limited time period is often not sufficient for the work that has to be done on the test. So I ask, are we really interested in discovering what the student knows, or do we leave it all up to the textbook authors to determine what and how the evaluation is made.
A very simple way of evaluating the students'
knowledge of certain grammar points, is to let them show you if
they are capable of using it in a sentence.
Ask them to write 6 sentences using these
possessives adjectives and another 6 sentences using the
possessive pronouns.
You'll probably are saying, "Wow, that's too
easy." Textbooks have a way of explaining a grammar rule that generally confuses more than explains. There is usually no more than one or maximum 2 sentences given as examples and then the students are expected to confront pages and pages of written exercises. I also find that too many different grammar rules are introduced in one lesson and too often the grammar is given in pieces, that is, a bit in one lesson and then a few lessons later another bit and continuing in this way, the students never get to see the entire explanation in one place. I judge that to be very confusing. The wise teacher will prepare additional photocopies to Simplify so that she is sure the students can understand the point and are capable of USING it themselves in sentences. This time reserved to having the students Try Out the grammar is invaluable and definitely a good means for them to try using it in conversation. In previous posts on my blog I described how the students can practice using the language. (using an ID to ask questions about a person, using magazine photos to write up short dialogues, using various topics to talk about, etc.) What is teaching English? It's an opportunity to stimulate your class so that they willingly will try to use the language in conversation.
A Nice Thought "As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in schools."
