I am a teacher but I’m also a born collector!!
I collect old magazines and newspapers for photos and articles,
travel brochures, shopping catalogues, and supermarket
throw-a-ways.
I always find these materials extremely useful when I need ideas
for preparing lessons.
Here’s one idea for using old magazines..
I cut out the titles of articles that are in Italian and I mount
them on cardboard and place them in "The Translate, please!"
Box.
Some examples:
I libri che non hanno
bisogno di pubblicità.
Single sì, ma per quanto?
Che cosa ha il computer
che io non ho?
Se posso fare questa,
posso fare tutto!
The fact is that it can be interesting to see if the students
are capable of translating them.
Very often by doing this, they are able to review the grammar
rules.
There is also the possibility of cutting out English titles from
English magazines!
Some examples:
Don’t give in!
Rise and shine!
It’s a time saver.
Take it from me.
It’s my will power.
O.K., times up!
It’s a good idea to have the students copy these
phrases in their notebooks, under the heading, "Useful
Expressions".
Learning expressions is very valuable if the
students are to learn the "spoken" idiom.
A Nice Thought
