Here I am again to continue
our talk about the usage of magazine photos in an English lesson.
- Hunt up
photos of hotels and their descriptions from Travel Catalogues. Hand one to
each student, and they are to write questions using the information given.
Examples:
Is it a 3 luxury hotel? Does it provide room service? How far is it from the airport?
Etcetera etcetera. An additional activity could
be that they try to make up an imaginary hotel, and list all the comforts,
services, prices etc..
- In Home magazines
you can find photos of the various rooms of a house. Paste the photo, for
example, of the living room, on a sheet of paper, and then label the names of
the different pieces of furniture, and room accessories.
Try to find a
photo for every room in the house. It’s a good idea to let the students help
you by bringing in old magazines from home. An additional activity could be
to have them draw a picture of their room, and label everything in it!
- Find fashion photos
to use to label the Parts of a Body.
- If you can find some
unusual photos you can use them with your students to
make up humorous
CAPTIONS. Examples: A photo of a dog wearing a Versace scarf. “And
they call THIS my birthday gift?” An oven mitt with a burnt finger:
“I
did it... again!!”
My advice is to
collect all kinds of magazines and spend an evening “photo hunting”
(P.S. Don’t
waste time reading the articles, unless of course, they’re in English!). I must admit there aren’t any magazines in my house that are in “one piece”. In
fact, my kids used to call them the “Swiss Cheese” magazines! Holes, everywhere!
Next time we’ll talk about other visual aids to prepare. Start collecting
cardboard in various colours! Colour always adds a nice touch to classroom
materials.
Now for another Nice Thought:
“Almost anything you will do will be insignificant, but it is very important
that you do it”. (Mahatma Gandhi)
