Pictures speak…..as
loud as…..words!!! They also help students learn new vocabulary
words without having to translate them from Italian.
We often
forget that it's important to know the names of the common
things we see all around us!
A good
activity is to LABEL pictures.
1) Start off
with labelling the ROOMS of a house. Label all the furniture in
each room as well as the objects found there. The students can
make a drawing of their room and label everything
2) Label a
CAR, roof, hood, bumper, trunk etc.
3) Label a
FACE, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, eyelashes, nose etc.
4) Label a
BODY, head, neck, shoulders, arms, etc.
5) Young
children can label the different objects in their CLASSROOM, by
making name cards and tacking them to the objects. Ex. Desk,
blackboard, bulletin board, window, door etc.
It's amazing
how many new vocabulary words the students can learn in this
way!
Why not let the students participate by finding interesting
photos dealing with various subjects.
For a more advanced group, urge the students to write short
dialogues that take place in different locations.
Ex.
………..at school
………..at the supermarket
………..at a clothing store
………..at a bookshop
………..at a furniture store
………..at the travel agency
Each of these
locations has need of a specific vocabulary.
It's a good idea if the teacher gives the student some help by
discussing the verbs and vocabulary that can be used in the
dialogue.
Ex.
At the travel agency
Travel brochure tour
flight
schedule
destination
A plane\train\bus fare to rent a
car\camper to stay in a hotel\motel
Before the
students start to write their dialogue, it's wise if they read
something in English. It could be dialogues that they had
already written (corrected by the teacher!) or else dialogues
that the teacher had given them. In this way they "enter into"
the English language before starting out writing.
