Discover New York
City!
I was born in New York, a truly fantastic city and more than once my students ask me about it. So here’s a short “taste” of New York. “I want to be in the city that never sleeps… I want to be a part of it…New York, New York.” Lisa Minnelli sang this song many years ago but it’s still very popular. People are always attracted to this city and justly so.
My city is so full of things to see that I hardly
know where to begin. Generally tourists rush to the main
attractions, The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State building,
Central Park, not to mention all the famous department stores
like Bloomingdale’s or Macy’s. Another day take a new direction and head downtown. Wall Street, the world famous financial district is awesome and then passing Ground Zero (after saying a prayer for all the victims) go down to the Seaport, now a reproduction of the “old New York”. In the evening stop at the Village, the artist’s haven and stroll in Washington Square to see the artists art work, and listen to the “street artists” play their instruments. After exploring Little Italy, cross over to Chinatown where the telephone booths are flaming red pagodas, and the quaint shops make you feel like you’re in the Orient. New York is a city you’ll want to explore on your own!
An interesting class project would be “discovering
New York”. The students can work in groups to find the
following information:
The students can add photographs of the city to
illustrate their project.
“New York City is a place apart. It can not be
matched to a city in any other country."
