There are 5 question
words that always seem to give the students some problems.
Who What Where When Why
Here is a nice
activity for the students to try.
Tell them take out five sheets of paper and on each one write as
a title the question word.
Then they are to fill in these pages with examples
WHO
WHAT
WHERE
WHEN
Mr. Brown a car at
school in the morning
My friend a tree in the city
at noon
A doctor a bus at home
after lunch
A teacher a vase on the sofa before
breakfast
WHY
Because I’m late
Because I’m hungry
Because I couldn’t find my keys
Because I’m happy
Once the
students can understand the meaning of the five W’s, they have a
great advantage in conversation practice.
Play the "Five
minute" game
Have the
students write as many questions as they can with one of the
above question words. Ex. Who. They’ll have only 5 minutes to
do it!
Let them continue this game using all the W question words.
They will see for themselves which of these question words is
easiest for them to make up questions!
Another
activity can be to give the students a short paragraph and then
after having read it, make up as many “W” questions as
possible.
These practice
activities are very practical and you’ll notice their ability to
use these question words will greatly increase.
