It’s important to introduce situations that the
students can use to express themselves correctly. This
activity can be used to do just that.
What would you say if you wanted to….?
……invite someone out.
……give someone advice.
……be polite to someone.
……criticize someone.
……offer to help someone.
……be generous.
……borrow money from a friend.
……ask someone for a date.
……compliment someone.
……introduce your friend to your family.
……convince your father to lend you the car.
……welcome a new classmate.
…....apologize to someone.
……announce your engagement to your family.
……order dinner in a restaurant.
……ask directions.
……reserve a room in a hotel.
……order a book at the bookshop.
……complain about the service at the Post
Office.
Of course, the
students have to have a good background knowledge of expressions
and vocabulary. Perhaps the teacher can review some before she
starts asking for class participation.
Invite the students to take notes so they can be
better prepared for this activity in the future. The teacher
can also have them make up short situations to be used.
These situations can be written on strips
(coloured, please!) and put into a box and the students can pick
out one at random. It could be helpful if the students worked
in pairs, at least for the first time they do this activity.
Choose two class “secretaries” to write down the
students’ answers. The teacher, after having corrected them,
can make copies for the students to keep.

nothing.”
