Learning English should be enjoyable for
the students.
It’s up to the teacher to stimulate class participation. The
students should feel they that are a part of the lesson planning
and class organization.
“It’s YOUR turn to Teach” day would be a fun and
enlightening activity. The students decide who wants to be a
teacher and he or she can choose a topic or a creative activity
for the class to follow. The “teacher” is allowed to have 2
other students help with the planning of the day’s lesson .
Rotate so every students gets a chance.
1) Creating a CLASS MOTTO.
Here are a few suggestions:
Only the Brave… learn English!
E.T... English Territory!!
A Beautiful Mind thinks… in English!
Only English is spoken here!
Of course, the students can come up with lots of ideas. Let them
vote for the one they like best. They can post the Motto on the
classroom door.
2) Putting up a Class BULLETIN BOARD.
The students can decide what they want on the board. And it can
be changed every month..
Suggestions:
Famous sayings.
Unusual expressions .
Photos with humorous captions made up by the students.
Cartoons translated into English
List of the student’s birthdays!
Holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
Give the students a chance to use their imagination and
creativity.
3) When the students are into writing dialogues, they can become
“reporters” and interview a famous person. They can find
all the information about the person they choose in Internet.
After these “interviews” are corrected by the teacher, they can
be photocopied and then put together in the form of a booklet.
In this way they all can read their classmates’ interviews.
The students might also like to add a photo of the person they
interviewed!
4) Working in groups the students can “invent a holiday”
For example: “Yes (or No!) Day
“I Love my Computer” Day
Give the reasons why it should be a holiday.
How it is celebrated.
When it is celebrated.
Where it is celebrated.
I’m sure there be will more than one suggestion made by the
students because everyone loves a holiday!!!
Let the students work in groups. It helps the timid ones who
hate to be in the limelight, and the students who are more
advanced have a chance to help out the others. This “working
together” is very valuable. The teacher becomes the observer and
can better evaluate the students’ progress. This method can be
used when they are asked to work creatively on class projects.
We can eventually talk about creative projects and I’d like some
of your ideas too.
Another Nice Thought:
“What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult for
each other”.
George Eliot
