Non abbiamo paura

We are not afraid

In the night between 14 June and 15 June, a friend of ours was killed, a brother in the party, Peppino Basile, Italia dei Valori town councillor in Ugento and provincial councillor in Lecce.

A dear friend, I remember him from the time that Italia dei Valori started off, he was always present:a big voice, he was determined, he always fought for his ideals, everything that was illegal for him had to be fought against without regard to anyone.
4 |
When he took up his position as town councillor he said: "From now on, here nothing illegal will ever be done, otherwise there’ll have to go over my dead body.
5 |
E cosi aveva detto al consiglio provinciale.
And he said the same in the provincial council.
6 |
Everyone remembers him, and I remember him well because at every demonstration he was the first to arrive, wearing the flag and carrying the banner in his hands and after that we arrived.
7 |
He made Italia dei Valori his point of reference for his battles for the rule of law, basically he was more of a "dipietrist" than Di Pietro.
8 |
That’s why we of Italia dei Valori want to remember him as a friend who gave his life to further his ideals.

We will leave it to the magistracy to uncover who are the guilty ones, we believe it will be possible to find that out, we don’t believe it will be difficult to do that because Peppino never kept his enemies hidden, he always faced up to them with an open heart, he faced up to them in the council chambers, he faced up to them in the streets, he faced up to them with a stern face, and so it’s possible to find out the first and second name of the one who decided to end the game with 10 stab wounds, evidently delivered because how Peppino worked was no longer acceptable.

It’s not the first time and he’s not the first one of Italia dei Valori to be threatened.
11 |
Lui era già stato minacciato in precedenza.
He had already been threatened before.
12 |
Little is known about it, but another of our councillors, Vittorio Giunta, of Rome’s zone 3, opened the post and found a cartridge with explicit threats telling him to stop, or to face a nasty end.
13 |
Vittorio Giunta deals with the fight against usury. He is dealing with a transparent commercial activity on his territory.
14 |
He too has said that things have to be done according to the rule of law, and this position of his against usury has brought him to this situation of really serious threats.
15 |
We are standing close to him and to all of our people in Italia dei Valori we say: never before as in this moment have we all felt like a single united family, so that there can be an end to illegality and above all the misuse of power, the threats, and the violence.

They are not frightening us and we will not allow ourselves to be intimidated. This is even a way of remembering the work of Peppino Basile, who was a true person, with a big heart, who believed in his ideals.
17 |
A person who died for his ideals.
