Oggi è solo un breve intervento, un saluto e un assaggio, anche perché noto che qualche infiltrato c'è, nel senso che qualcuno qua dentro ha più di trent'anni.

Today’s address is only a brief one, a mere greeting and a taste of what is still to come, also because I note that there are a few gatecrashers amongst us, in the sense that there are some over-thirties in the crowd.

Abbiamo voluto questo incontro con i giovani perché, come diceva mia sorella "una lezione dal passato, piedi fermi sul presente, dritto verso futuro", il futuro dell'Italia dei Valori siete voi, siete voi giovani che potete cambiare non solo migliorare l'azione dell'Italia dei Valori ma potete contribuire a cambiare la credibilità delle istituzioni nel nostro Paese.

We wanted to have this meeting with the youth because, as my sister said to me, it is a case of"learning from the past but rooted in the present and looking to the future", and you guys are the future of the Italia dei Valori Party, you young people that have the ability to change rather than simply improve the effectiveness of the Italia dei Valori Party, but you can also make a contribution towards improving the credibility of our Country’s institutions.

Voi dell'Italia dei Valori e tutti quanti i giovani che lavorano negli altri partiti, perché mi auguro davvero che si possa trovare un Paese pacificato dove i giovani si possano confrontare sulle idee e non più sulle furbizie.

This goes for you of the Italia dei Valori Party, as well as all the young people working within the other parties, because I truly hope that one day we may have a peaceful Country where young people can exchange ideas rather than clever tricks.

Credo che quel che sta accadendo in questi giorni non sia un buon esempio per la gioventù, l'utilizzo personale delle istituzioni, il sequestro delle funzioni parlamentari, l'approfittamento del bisogno.

I believe that what is happening at the moment is not setting a good example for this Country’s youth, namely the use of the institutions for private purposes, the hijacking of Parliamentary functions and the exploitation of poverty.

Ecco perché noi dell'Italia dei Valori abbiamo voluto questo incontro per i giovani perché volevamo e vogliamo che tra di voi vi conosciate un po e vi rendiate conto che non siamo soli.

That is why we of the Italia dei Valori Party were so determined to have this meeting with the youth, because we wanted, and still want to allow you guys get to know each other and for each of you to realise that you are not alone.

In recent days, while looking at that overcrowded square, certain people have said, "there are only a few people, three or four".

Tre quattro li, tre quattro qui, saremo la maggioranza di coloro che vogliono affrontare responsabilmente le proprie responsabilità e quindi l'impegno verso il Paese.

Three or four here and another three or four there, we will soon become a majority, made up of those with a desire to responsibly take on their responsibilities and make a commitment to the Country.

We wanted to hold this meeting in the belief that our aim, our"raison d’etre" if you will is to contribute to the process of the handing over of power to the next generation in our Country, through you guys.

Jean-Leonard Touadi is someone that I did not personally know and when we made the agreement with the Democratic Party, Veltroni told me that for some reason he could not put this man’s name on his party’s election lists.

And so the man became one of our candidates and was later elected and, together with Silvana, all the others, and myself he helped to organise this gathering.

There is a certain level of tension at the moment as regards our relationship with our allies, for reasons of which you are well aware, and this very same Jean-Leonard Touadi, who had been put up as candidate on behalf of the Democratic Party, while in our party could not but adhere to the reasons for his candidature.

Just this morning he made a comment, which I now pass on to you, that it took this party to show him some hospitality, even though he never was and is still not a member of our party, but I must say that we are proud to have been able to take someone like Touadi to Parliament.

That is why you should not feel bound to the Italia dei Valori Party in order to become municipal councillors or parliamentarians, but in accepting such positions, you must do so for the benefit of the Country, and not for your own benefit or for that of the Italia dei Valori Party.

Noi cosi come abbiamo fatto con Touadi, cosi come con altre personalità che abbiamo candidato in queste elezioni, non dell'Italia dei Valori, a cui abbiamo dato ospitalità e ne siamo orgogliosi.

In the same way as we did in the case of Touadi, we also put up other candidates that were not members of the Italia dei Valori Party, people that we simply hosted and something of which we are extremely proud.

And we will continue to do so, because the Italia dei Valori Party is not interested in getting involved in the numbers game, in shutting itself off in a dark place populated only by people who are able to bring in the greatest number of votes or only those that are so faithful that they only raise their hands when the master says so, even when it comes down to voting for shameful laws that are enough to make your stomach turn.
