Giuro fedeltà alla Piazza
I swear my allegiance to the streets
2 |
I’m publishing an interview I gave that is published in today’s La Repubblica.
3 |
As I said to the journalist the real disaster of this polemic is that what has been extracted are the words rather than the content of the whole of the 8 July demonstration.
4 |
The media have looked at the finger rather than at the moon.
5 |
They wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise, they nor those that send them out, because the content would have been incontrovertible.
6 |
Testo intervista.
Text of the interview.
7 |
Antonio Di Pietro: If they ask me to choose I choose the streets.
8 |
I don’t agree with the attacks on the Pope and against the Quirinale {seat of the President of the Republic}. Let that be clear.
9 |
We will respect the Head of State even if he signs the lodo Alfano.
10 |
But we will still be convinced that that is an error, that it is unconstitutional. It’s still possible to say that in a democracy, isn’t it?
11 |
Repubblica: Antonio Di Pietro, according to many, you are the leader of the apprentice wizards. On Tuesday in piazza Navona there was a domination of scurrilous tones and personal attacks and it was you who invited Beppe Grillo. You can’t say that you didn’t expect what happened.
12 |
Antonio Di Pietro: What is happening is a mystification, a true exploitation by the system of politics and information, that is attributing to Grillo’s words a value that is different from reality.
13 |
Repubblica: The attacks against the Head of State were heard by everyone.
14 |
Antonio Di Pietro: It’s a matter of looking at the speck of satire to hide the beam in the illiberal and constitutionally illegitimate behaviour of Berlusconi.
15 |
In piazza Navona something happened that is different from what is being recounted.
16 |
That square was an authentic expression of direct democracy, created by sincere indignation about the anti-democratic drift of the country.
17 |
Certainly, the voices on the stage were not aligned and pre-censored.
18 |
Noi non imporremo mai veline a nessuno.
We will never impose handouts on anyone.
19 |
Repubblica: No, not censoring. But was it not the case to stop Ms Guzzanti when she insulted Carfagna and the Pope?
20 |
Antonio Di Pietro: In a democracy each one can say what they want.
21 |
After that whoever speaks accepts responsibility for themselves.
22 |
Tanti hanno applaudito, altri come me hanno dissentito.
Many applauded. Others, like me, did not agree.
23 |
It does not please me that the Church and the Pope were drawn into the discussions.
24 |
I am with the Church of poor people, not that that is emblazoned.
25 |
Ma il Papa non c'azzeccava nulla.
But the Pope is not being called into play.
26 |
Repubblica: Veltroni says that it is because of people like Guzzanti that the Right is in power, even in Campidoglio {the seat of the City of Rome administration}.
27 |
Antonio Di Pietro: Se lo pensa davvero lo scriva sui manifesti e li faccia affiggere.
Antonio Di Pietro: If he really thinks that, let him write it on posters and get them displayed.
28 |
That way the citizens can see the lack of courage in accepting and recognising the responsibility for defeat.
29 |
Repubblica: Don’t you think that in relation to Ms Carfagna there has been a sort of bonfire in the streets, that they went beyond the limits, against a person who is anyway not able to defend herself from accusations based on gossip.
30 |
Antonio Di Pietro: In this situation, Minister Carfagna is one of the victims of her Head of Government, of the lack of transparency.
31 |
Anyway, I believe that things like that should not have been said in that way.
32 |
Repubblica: D'accordo.
Repubblica: OK. But don’t you think that you contributed to the raising of the volume? It was you yourself who talked about "magnaccia" {pimp} and it was your people who talked about Monica Lewinsky...
33 |
Antonio Di Pietro: There you are, you are just interested in gossip. You aren’t bothered about the real issues. Always talking about Carfagna.
34 |
Lei cosa sceglie?
Repubblica:To be truthful, the one talking of this, even in piazza Navona, was yourself. Veltroni invited you to make a choice: either Grillo and his "vaffa" or"to return to a rational and reformist enclosure". What did you choose?
35 |
Antonio Di Pietro: I don’t intend disassociating myself from piazza Navona, if this is what is being asked of me.
36 |
I do not share some of the passages as I have said, but there’s a lot of difference between that and criminalizing some of the speakers.
37 |
Insomma, sto con la piazza.
Basically, I stand with the people in the streets.
38 |
Repubblica: How are you thinking of reconnecting the thread of dialogue with the PD? Do you think it is still possible?
39 |
Antonio Di Pietro: That was not a gathering against the PD, but it was rebelling against Veltroni and his "wait-and-see".
40 |
Era anche una piazza democratica.
It was a democratic gathering.
41 |
The leader of the PD, got angry with me about it, let him take it up with his own people who were there and they were not a small number.
42 |
Repubblica: In fact, to tell the truth, Grillo attacked Veltroni himself.
43 |
Antonio Di Pietro: But the one who is leader of a 33% party must not be haughty.
44 |
Let him do like I do. Listen to the criticism and I always try to improve.
45 |
Repubblica: Don’t you think that the demonstration was a boomerang and that the Opposition has been weakened as a result?
46 |
Antonio Di Pietro: Macché.
Antonio Di Pietro: Quite the opposite.
47 |
Because of Tuesday, many citizens know what Berlusconi has done.
48 |
Il silenzio diventa connivenza.
Silence becomes connivance.
49 |
Now it’s the PD that has to decide internally whether to maintain the dialogue with the one who destroys the institutions to further his own business and to escape from trials.
50 |
Vorrebbero che facessimo opposizione zitti zitti, piano piano.
They would like us to do a silent, silent Opposition a quiet, quiet one.
51 |
Non ci stiamo.
We are not having it.
52 |
Repubblica: Il compito del capo dello Stato è gravoso, in queste ore.
Repubblica: The task of the Head of State is a great burden right now.
53 |
Don’t you think that attacks put him in further difficulty?.
54 |
Antonio Di Pietro: Maximum respect for the institution and for the person.
55 |
However, it would not be a true democracy one in which a citizen is not allowed to have a different opinion from the Quirinale.
56 |
We respect him, even if he maintains that the lodo Alfano is constitutional.
57 |
Ma resteremo convinti del contrario.
But we will still be convinced of the contrary.
