"Do your duty and bear the consequences", my sister Concettina said to me the day after the murder of Paolo Borsellino, when I, concerned about what was happening, told her of my anguish.

Era il 19 luglio 1992 ed ero nel pieno dell’attività di "Mani Pulite".

It was 19 July 1992 and I was slap bang in the middle of the "Mani Pulite" (Clean Hands) investigation.

Poco dopo arrivò in Procura una segnalazione dei R.O.S (Raggruppamento Operativo Speciale dei Carabinieri) che segnalava - come destinatario di possibili attentati mafiosi - anche la mia persona.

Shortly thereafter, the Public Prosecutors Office received a warning from the R.O.S (Special Operations Unit of the Carabinieri) stating that I too was on the list of potential targets for mafia attacks.

Ora è solo un ricordo ma all’epoca c’era realmente di che preoccuparsi in quanto stavano venendo fuori collegamenti a iosa fra la "migliore imprenditoria del Nord", la più "blasonata politica romana" e "incalliti mafiosi" di Cosa Nostra.

Nowadays, those events are nothing but a distant memory, but at the time, there were serious grounds for concern because the investigation was beginning to reveal connections galore between the "top entrepreneurship of the North" and the most "eminent Roman politicians" and the most "hardened mafia members" of the Cosa Nostra.

Nell’uno e nell’altro caso, entrambi - i politici e i mafiosi - avevano interesse a fermare le indagini e ad evitare qualsiasi travaso di investigazioni dall’uno all’altro campo, ma mentre i mafiosi usarono l’esplosivo per fermare i giudici, i politici ricorsero ad una soluzione grazie a Dio meno dolorosa: la delegittimazione e la denigrazione.

Either way, both the politicians and the mafia members were equally keen to halt the investigations and thus avoid any spill over from one case to another, however, while the mafia members resorted to the use of explosives in order to stop the judges in their tracks, the politicians instead resorted to a different solution, which, thank God, was far less painful, namely delegitimisation and denigration.

L’obiettivo mi apparve subito evidente: rendere poco credibile l’inchiesta Mani Pulite, dapprima criminalizzando l’attività giudiziaria che stavo svolgendo (con accuse ingiuste come arrestare innocenti, costringere al suicidio le persone, svolgere indagini in modo parziale al fine di favorire alcuni e danneggiare altri), poi con una vasta indagine retrospettiva sulla mia persona, alla ricerca di qualche neo (e chi non ne ha?) per farlo diventare un "bubbone immondo" da additare al pubblico disprezzo, infine costruendo a tavolino - scientemente e con dispendio di mezzi e di energie - veri e propri falsi dossier con storie inventate di sana pianta o comunque malevolmente ricostruite e raccontate in modo così suadente e sapientemente pubblicizzate da renderle apparentemente credibili.

Their aim immediately became evident to me, namely to attack the credibility of the Clean Hands investigation, firstly by criminalizing the judicial activities that I was carrying out (levelling unfair accusations that I was having innocent people arrested, driving people to commit suicide and carrying out the investigations half-heartedly in order to favour certain people while damaging others), then by carrying out a retrospective investigation of my past, searching for any black spots (and who amongst us has no such blemishes?) in order to blow them out of proportion in order to increase the level of public scorn, and finally by applying resources and energy to construct tailor made false dossiers containing plausible stories that were either invented from scratch or malevolently reconstructed an told in a sufficiently persuasive manner and so cleverly circulated as to make them appear to be credible.

On 6 December 1994 I was obliged to remove my toga and direct all of my energy to defending my honour in the only way that I knew how, namely in the courtroom, where I spent a number of years proving both my professional integrity and my personal innocence.

Nel frattempo, e per dare un nuovo scopo alla mia vita, ho cominciato a fare politica, convinto come ero e come sono che i "mali della politica" potevano essere curati solo con l’impegno civile, in quanto il magistrato arriva solo quando la "frittata è fatta" e solo per scoprire il colpevole.

Meanwhile, in order to give my life a new impetus, I became involved in politics, convinced then, as I am now that the "evils of politics" could only be eradicated by means of civil commitment, because a judge only gets involved once "the omelette has already been made" and then only to weed out the guilty party.

Ho pensato - e ci credo ancora - che bisognava impegnarsi per un ricambio generazionale della classe dirigente, unico modo per ottenere un modello comportamentale diverso e più dignitoso del modo di fare politica.

I believed at the time, as I still do now, that what was needed was a commitment to the total revamp of the ruling class as the only way to establish a new and more dignified way to be involved in politics.

Con sommo dispiacere dei miei detrattori, sono riuscito a costruire un partito che c’è e che - nel Paese e nel Parlamento - sta facendo il suo dovere e fa sentire la sua voce, tanto che la fiducia ed il consenso cresce giorno per giorno.

Much to the extreme displeasure of my detractors, I have managed to build up a party that is here to stay and that is doing its duty and making its voice heard, both within the Country and in Parliament, so much so that the level of trust and the approval ratings are rising with each passing day.

Ma la "verità processuale", secondo le sentenze e gli altri provvedimenti che i giudici - di volta in volta - hanno emesso in relazione ai tanti fatti ed ai tanti eventi che - nel bene e nel male - mi hanno visto protagonista.

Not the truth in my own words however, lest someone think that I am twisting the truth for my own purposes, but rather the "legal truth", as has emerged from the sentences and provisions handed down by the judges from time to time regarding the many facts and the many events that have involved me for better or for worse.

Comincerò dalla vicenda di Fabio Salomone, di cui pubblico la "Sentenza della Sezione Disciplinare del Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura " n.2/98 del 16 gennaio 1998 in cui si "dichiara il dr. Fabio Salamone responsabile della incolpazione ascrittogli al capo A - vale a dire responsabile del fatto che non si fosse astenuto dallo svolgere indagini su di me - e gli infligge la sanzione disciplinare dell’ammonimento-" (così testualmente il dispositivo).

I will therefore begin with the matter of Fabio Salomone, by posting the "Sentence handed down by the Disciplinary Section of the Upper Council of the Magistrature", namely No.2/98 dated 16 January 1998, in which "Dr. Fabio Salamone is found guilty as charged at point A - in other words, guilty of having failed to abstain from investigating me personally - and hereby issues an official warning" (as stipulated in the text of the finding).
