Riporto una mia intervista, rilasciata a "L'Espresso", in merito alle reazioni da parte del centrodestra e del centrosinistra di fronte allle notizie di indagini sul sottosegretario all'Economia Nicola Cosentino e sul coordinatore campano del Pdl Luigi Cesaro.

Here is the text of the interview I gave to the "L'Espresso" daily, concerning both the centre-right and the centre-left’s reaction to the news of the investigations being conducted on the Undersecretary for the Economy, Nicola Cosentino and the Pdl’s Co-ordinator for the Campania Region, Luigi Cesaro.

L'Espresso: In attesa che questo avvenga, come spiega le reazioni del mondo dei partiti alle indagini in Campania?

L'Espresso: Pending the outcome of the investigations, how do you explain the reaction from the political world regarding the investigations going on in the Campania Region?

Antonio Di Pietro: La politica oggi non reagisce perché non ci sono partiti immuni dalla possibilità di vedere finire sotto inchiesta personaggi di livello nazionale, regionale e comunale.

Antonio Di Pietro: The politicians have failed to react at this time simply because none of the parties are immune from the possibility of seeing certain of their top level representatives at the national, regional or municipal level land up under investigation.

Si gira la testa dall'altra parte, o ci si salva l'anima con qualche frase di circostanza perché c'è il terrore che se oggi attacco il mio avversario politico, chiedendo di lasciare incarichi di governo o nelle amministrazioni locali fino a quando non sarà accertata o meno la responsabilità penale, domani potrà accadere a qualcuno della mia formazione politica.

They either look the other way or they salve their collective conscience by issuing some or other trite statement, because there is a very real fear that if today they attack one of their political adversaries, demanding that he resign from his government office or the local administration prior to his guilt or innocence having been established, then tomorrow the same thing could happen to someone from my party or political alliance.

Abbiamo il presidente del Consiglio che fa di tutto per evitare il suo processo, che dice ai suoi avvocati parlamentari di ricusare i giudici o fissare impegni parlamentari per disertare il processo.Tutti gli altri si comportano di conseguenza e si sentono protetti dal capo.

Antonio Di Pietro: What precisely were you expecting! We currently have a Prime Minister who has done absolutely everything in his power to avoid his own court cases and has instructed his parliamentary attorneys either to object to the judge or to obtain a parliamentary commitment to circumvent the court case. Everyone else acts accordingly because they feel protected by the boss.

L'Espresso: Perché il Partito democratico, la formazione più forte nel centrosinistra, ha assunto una posizione tiepida e burocratica di fronte allo scenario dell'inchiesta rivelata da 'L'espresso' sugli intrecci tra politica, camorra e impresa per lo smaltimento dei rifiuti?

L'Espresso: Why has the Democratic Party, which is the most powerful component within the centre-left, taken up such a luke-warm and bureaucratic position regarding the investigation, revealed by 'L'espresso', into alleged links between certain politicians, the Camorra and a waste disposal company?

And this is not only the case in Campania where the Regional Premier, Antonio Bassolino was not asked to step down when he was placed under investigation.

Antonio Di Pietro: Quando sento Walter Veltroni rispondere a una domanda durante un'intervista televisiva che, sì la giustizia è un problema importante, ma ve ne sono di più importanti come l'occupazione e il lavoro, mi cascano le braccia.

Antonio Di Pietro: When I hear Walter Veltroni answering a question put to him during an interview on the television, stating that while the issue of justice is an important problem, there are other more important problems, such as employment and job creation, I simply cannot believe what I’m hearing.

Una legge che si potrebbe approvare in pochissimi giorni composta di pochi, chiari articoli, che vieti di candidare in Parlamento, alla Regione, al Comune o alla Provincia chi è stato condannato e che vieti di essere candidato a chi è sotto inchiesta, così come di assumere incarichi di governo, sia a livello centrale che periferico.

All we need is a law, containing a few clear, simple clauses and which could potentially be passed within a few days, stipulating that no person with a criminal record will be allowed to stand as a candidate for a post in Parliament, the Regional Councils, the Municipal Councils or the Provincial Councils. It must also prohibit anyone who is under investigation from taking up any government post, either in central government or outside.

It has also happened that other members of my party have found themselves under investigation, however, we didn’t hold back: they were either shown the door or, in the case where they were appointed to regional government posts, we demanded that they be suspended until such time as the position regarding their guilt or innocence had been clarified.

Antonio Di Pietro: There are a number of important and supposedly informative television programmes being broadcast, such as 'Porta a porta', 'Matrix' and 'Ballarò', however, I cannot remember any discussion having been held to date regarding the meaning of and the foundation for the allegations of dangerous links with the camorra involving Undersecretary for the Economy, Cosentino, or Forza Italia’s representative for the Campania Region, or for that matter centre-left regional councillor Roberto Conte, who was arrested a few months ago.

Io non ho cambiato idea sul fatto che, ogni volta che gli atti sono stati portati a conoscenza dell'indagato, è bene che si sappia in modo limpido e lineare perché una persona è sotto inchiesta, perché è stata arrestata, perché è stata perquisita, perché è stata intercettata.

Nothing has happened to change my mind regarding the fact that once the individual under investigation has been informed accordingly, we should be informed, clearly and unambiguously, as to why the individual was under investigation, why he/she was arrested, why he/she was searched and why his/her telephone conversations were tapped.

Sì, perché alcune forze politiche non sono più rappresentate in Parlamento ed altre di opposizione come il Partito democratico hanno scelto di seguire la linea del vecchio decreto Mastella che vuole regolamentare pubblicazione e intercettazioni.

Antonio Di Pietro: That is true, because certain political forces are no longer represented in Parliament and certain others, such as the Democratic Party, have chosen to stick to the letter of the old Mastello Decree, which was aimed at regulating the press and the issue of telephone tapping.
