Lila the fox was resting outside her den at the Merlin City rubbish dump.

La volpe Lila stava riposando fuori dalla sua tana nella discarica di Merlinopoli.

It was early morning and the sun was rising

Era mattina presto e il sole stava sorgendo.

Suddenly she heard a faint sound.

Improvvisamente sentì un suono fioco.

She pricked up her ears.

Aguzzò le orecchie.

What could it be? A bird? No.

Cosa poteva essere? Un uccello? No.

Then she heard it again.

Poi lo sentì di nuovo.

It seemed to be coming from a cupboard someone had thrown away, quite close to her.

Sembrava venire da un armadio che qualcuno aveva buttato via, molto vicino a lei.

Lila tiptoed towards it.

Lila si avvicinò all'armadio in punta di piedi.

The cupboard door opened slightly and out came a small foot, wearing a shoe.

Lo sportello dell'armadio si aprì leggermente e ne uscì un piedino con indosso una scarpa.

Then came a leg.

Poi apparve una gamba.

“What’s going on?” Lila wondered.

“Che sta succedendo?” si chiese Lila.

Then out of the cupboard stepped a small boy.

A quel punto, dall'armadio venne fuori un bambino.

He looked lost and the fox felt sorry for him.

Sembrava perso e la volpe provò della pena per lui.  

“Hello: I’m Lila” she said. “Who are you?”

“Ciao: sono Lila,” disse. "Tu chi sei?"

“I… I’m Tom,” said the boy.

“Io... io sono Tom,” disse il bambino.

“I... I fell asleep in this cupboard.

“Io... mi sono addormentato in questo armadio.

And then… Where am I?”
“You’re at the Merlin City rubbish dump”, said Lila.

E poi... ma dove sono?”
“Sei nella discarica di Merlinopoli,” disse Lila.

“The dump?” said Tom, puzzled and looking all around.

“La discarica?” disse Tom, confuso e guardandosi tutto attorno.

“Oh no! My Mum must be worried sick! How am I going to find my way home?”

“Oh no! La mia mamma sarà preoccupatissima! Come faccio per ritrovare la via di casa?”

Lila smiled at him with her big, brown eyes.

Lila gli sorrise con i suoi grandi occhi castani.

“I’ll help you,” she said, gently.

“Ti aiuterò io,” disse dolcemente.

Then she looked at the cupboard.

Poi diede un'occhiata all’armadio.

“That’s a nice cupboard”, she said.

“È un bell'armadio,” disse.

“Why did your parents throw it away?”

“Perché i tuoi genitori l’hanno buttato via?”

“My Mum said it wasn’t modern enough so Dad bought a new one.

“La mamma ha detto che non era abbastanza moderno così il babbo ne ha comprato uno nuovo.

But I like the old one.

Ma a me piace quello vecchio.

It makes a cosy den and I wanted to curl up in it just once more.

Fa da riparo accogliente e volevo rannicchiarmici dentro ancora una volta.

I must have fallen asleep.

Probabilmente mi sono addormentato.

And now they’ve thrown me away too!”

E ora hanno buttato via anche me!”

“Human grown-ups are a bit weird, aren’t they” said Lila.

“Gli esseri umani adulti sono davvero un po' strani!” disse Lila.

She lifted a paw and pointed in the direction of Merlin City.

Alzò una zampa indicando la direzione di Merlinopoli.

In the air above the city hung a grey blanket of smoke.

Nell'aria soprastante la città era  sospesa una coltre grigia di fumo.

“You see all that horrible smoke? That comes from the factories where human beings make things.

“Vedi tutto quel fumo orrendo? Viene dalle fabbriche dove gli esseri umani fabbricano le cose.

Too many useless things that soon get thrown away.

Troppe cose inutili che vengono subito buttate via.

Why do they do it? I wish they would stop”.

Perchè lo fanno? Vorrei che smettessero di farlo”

There were tears in Lila’s eyes.

C’erano delle lacrime negli occhi di Lila.

Tom sat down next to her and she snuggled up against him.

Tom si sedette vicino a lei e Lila gli si strinse contro.

He could feel her heart beating.

Tom poteva sentire il battito del suo cuore.

“How can Merlin City breathe with all that dirt in the air?” said Lila.

“Come fa Merlinopoli a respirare con tutto quello sporco nell’aria?” disse Lila.

“And just smell the water in this stream.

“E poi, senti l'odore dell'acqua di questo fiume.

Yuck! It’s like hundreds of rotting fish.

Che schifo! È come avere centinaia di pesci che stanno marcendo.

What happened to the lovely scent of the wild flowers? I’m scared of what’s happening, Tom”.

Dove è andato a finire l'incantevole profumo dei fiori di campo? Ho tanta paura di quello che sta succedendo, Tom.”

Foxes are sensitive animals.

Le volpi sono degli animali sensibili.

And what’s more, they’re always right.

E per di più, hanno sempre ragione.

Lila stood up.

Lila si alzò.

“Come on”, she said: "Let’s go and find your Mum”.

“Forza,” disse: “Andiamo a trovare la tua mamma.”

All around the dump was a tall wire fence.

Tutto attorno alla discarica c’era un alto steccato di filo di ferro.

Lila led the way to a small hole in the fence.

Lila fece strada conducendo Tom verso un buco nello steccato.

They were just going to crawl through it when the fox sensed danger.

Stavano già per attraversare il buco a quattro zampe quando la volpe intuì un pericolo.

“Watch out!” she yelled: but it was too late.

“Attenzione!” urlò: ma era troppo tardi.

The man who looked after the dump was standing there.

L'uomo che faceva la guardia alla discarica stava ritto in piedi davanti a loro. (lett. l'uomo che badava alla discarica era_in_piedi là)

Lila dived for cover behind an old washing machine.

Lila cercò un nascondiglio tuffandosi dietro una vecchia lavatrice. (lett. Lila si_tuffò per/alla_ricerca_di nascondiglio dietro una vecchia lavatrice)

Tom tried to follow her but tripped.

Tom cercò di seguirla ma inciampò.

A strong pair of hands gripped him by the arms and lifted him up.

Due mani forti lo afferrarono per le braccia sollevandolo per aria. (lett. un forte paio di mani afferrò lui per le braccia e sollevò lui in alto).

“What are you doing here? You little pest!” roared the man.

“Che stai facendo qui? Piccola peste!” tuonò l’uomo.

“Can’t you see the sign? It says KEEP OUT: STRICTLY PRIVATE”.

“Non vedi il cartello? Dice “Divieto di accesso: proprietà privata” (lett. tieniti fuori: strettamente privato)

His face was red and he looked very angry.

La sua faccia era rossa e sembrava molto arrrabbiato.

“I… I got thrown away with the rubbish,” said Tom.

“Io... sono stato buttato via con l'immondizia,” disse Tom.

“I’ve got to find my Mum.

“Devo assolutamente ritrovare la mia mamma.

She must be very worried about me”.

Deve essere molto preoccupata per me.”

The man put Tom down.

L’uomo mise giù Tom.

Then he sat on the old washing machine and looked at the boy kindly, with sadness in his eyes.

Poi si sedette sulla vecchia lavatrice e guardò il ragazzo dolcemente, con gli occhi pieni di tristezza.

“Don’t tell me they’ve even started throwing away children!” he said.

“Non dirmi che hanno perfino incominciato a buttare via i bambini!” disse.

“No, it was an accident” answered Tom.

“No, è stato un incidente” rispose Tom.

“I fell asleep in the cupboard.

“Mi sono addormentato nell'armadio.

Honest! Then my friend the fox found me.”

Davvero! Poi la mia amica volpe mi ha ritrovato.

Lila came out from her hiding-place.

“Lila uscì dal suo nascondiglio.

“Hello”, she said.

“Salve,” disse.

“You look upset.

“Signore, sembri sconvolto.

What’s the matter?” The man was lost in thought for a moment.

Cos'è successo? ” L’uomo sembrava perso nei suoi pensieri. (lett. l'uomo era perso in pensiero per un attimo)

Then he said: “Listen, I’ve got something very important to tell you.

Poi disse: “Ascoltate, ho una cosa molto importante da dirvi.

Something that matters to the whole world.

Una cosa che è importante per tutto il mondo.

It’s a BIG secret, but because it’s so important I want you to tell everybody.

È un GRANDE segreto, ma siccome è talmente importante, voglio che lo raccontiate a tutti.

Everybody! Do you promise?” “Oh yes! Yes!” answered Lila and Tom.

A tutti! Promettete?” “Sì! Sì!” risposero Lila e Tom.

They sat looking at the man, wondering what he had to say.

Si sedettero guardando l'uomo, chiedendosi cosa mai avesse da dire.

The man took a deep breath and began…

L’uomo fece un respiro profondo e iniziò...

“If people aren’t careful about what they throw away, then the water, the air and the ground will become so polluted that we won’t be able to go on living”.

“Se la gente non sta attenta a quello che butta via, l’acqua, l’aria e il terreno diventeranno talmente inquinati che non potremo più continuare a vivere.”

“That can’t be true!” said Tom.

“Questo non può essere vero!” disse Tom.

“Oh yes it is” said the man.

“Ah sì che lo è” disse l’uomo.

“People throw all sorts of things away.

“La gente butta via ogni sorta di cose.

Machines, bottles of medicine, pots of paint, anything.

Macchinari, flaconi di medicinali, barattoli di vernice, qualsiasi cosa.

And they get rid of their rubbish any old how.

E si sbarazzano delle loro immondizie in qualsiasi modo.

But the rubbish has lots of poisonous stuff in it.

Ma l'immondizia contiene al suo interno tutta una serie di sostanze velenose. (lett. ma l'immondizia ha mucchi di velenosa roba in essa)

Very dangerous stuff.

Roba molto pericolosa.

And those poisons get into the soil where our food grows, the air we breathe, the water we drink.

E questi veleni penetrano nella terra dove cresce il nostro cibo, dentro l’aria che respiriamo, nell’acqua che beviamo.

We’re gradually….”

Piano piano stiamo…”

He stopped, unable to say the terrible word.

Si fermò, incapace di pronunciare la terribile parola.

“You mean we’re gradually killing ourselves?” asked Tom.

“Vuoi dire che piano piano stiamo uccidendo noi stessi?” chiese Tom.

The man nodded.

L’uomo assentì.

“If we don’t do something about it, that’s what could happen.

“Se non facciamo qualcosa per rimediare, questo è quello che potrebbe accadere.

We ALL have to change our ways, before it’s too late”.

TUTTI noi dobbiamo cambiare le nostre abitudini prima che sia troppo tardi.”

For a minute or two, nobody spoke.

Per un minuto o due, nessuno parlò.

Lila could hardly believe her ears.

Lila quasi non riusciva a credere alle sue orecchie.

Tom just sat there, frowning.

Tom se ne stava lì seduto aggrottando le sopracciglia.

Then the man went on: "If we want to be healthy, we must have a healthy planet.

Poi l’uomo continuò: “Se vogliamo essere in buona salute, dobbiamo avere un pianeta in buona salute.

If the Earth gets sick, we all get sick!” “Yes, I see,” said Tom.

Se la terra si ammala, ci ammaleremo tutti!” “Si, capisco,” disse Tom.

“But… Oh, if only my Mum knew that!”

“Ma...oh, se la mia mamma lo sapesse...”

The man looked up at the sky.

L’uomo guardò in su verso il cielo. 

His hands were trembling.

Le sue mani tremavano.

“There’s another secret I want to tell you”, he said.

“C’è ancora un altro segreto che vi voglio raccontare,” disse.

“A very important, hidden secret.

“Un segreto molto importante e nascosto.

Something terrible is happening high above us, way up in the sky.

Qualcosa di terribile sta accadendo in alto sopra di noi, molto in alto nel cielo.

You can’t see it.

Non lo si può vedere.

You can’t smell it.

Non se ne può sentire l'odore.

You can’t touch it.

Non si può toccarlo.

But it’s happening, and it’s very worrying”.

Ma sta succedendo ed è un fatto molto preoccupante.”

“What is it?” asked Tom and Lila.

“Che cos’è?” chiesero Tom e Lila.

“All around the Earth, way up in the sky, there’s a layer of gas.

Tutto attorno alla terra, lontano nel cielo, c’è una fascia di gas.

It’s a gas called ozone.

È un gas chiamato ozono.

It’s very important to us.

È molto importante per noi.

It lets in the good sunlight and keeps out most of the bad sunlight – the harmful rays that could otherwise make us terribly ill.

Lascia entrare le radiazioni solari buone e tiene fuori la maggior parte delle radiazioni solari cattive - quelle radiazioni dannose che, altrimenti, potrebbero farci ammalare in modo terribile.

The ozone layer protects us from those rays.

La fascia di ozono ci protegge da quelle radiazioni.

But the trouble is, we’re damaging the ozone layer.

Ma il guaio è che noi stiamo danneggiando la fascia di ozono.

We’re using too many spray cans with stuff in them that destroys ozone.

Stiamo usando troppi spray pieni di sostanze che distruggono l’ozono.

So now the ozone layer has got a hole in it!”

Così adesso la fascia di ozono ha dentro un buco!”
