Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. There's a little bit of poetry in each one of us.

Not all poetry can be of this nature:
          Roses are red
          Violets are blue
          Sugar is sweet
          And so are you!

It's true we do think of poetry using rhyming words, but there is more to it that that.
It's difficult to define poetry. People have various ideas on this subject.
The formal definition is:
Poetry is the imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response.

Free verse is a poem that has no rhyme.
I believe in introducing children to both types of poetry.

Being aware of the rhyming words in a poem is essential.
First read a rhyming poem to the class. Have the children read it and then let them tell you the words that rhyme. If they have some difficulty at first ,the teacher can read the poem again, this time stressing the rhyming words.
The poem can then be copied into their notebooks and the students can circle of underline the rhyming words in red.

Free verse poetry is very creative and your students may just surprise you with their abilities.
Here is an example of one student's work.
          I am an owl
          I am as old
          As the
               hills
          And as wise as the
               wind
          at night you might hear me calling
          whoooooowhoooooo whoooo.

The teacher can research and find examples of both kinds of poetry. It's important for the children to notice the difference.

Then suggest some subjects.
They can be:
           Your home
           Your family
           Your teacher
            An animal
            A season of the year

All the poems the children write should be photocopied to form a Poetry book and each child will get a copy.
It's not too soon to develop creativity in children. Poems are ideal to help our students become aware of their surroundings and their emotions.
