k

Why don’t we ask the children what makes them happy.

The teacher can demonstrate by telling the children what makes HER happy.
Ex.  I’m happy when I teach.
                         When I cook
                         When it’s my birthday

The teacher can then prepare a small booklet for each child.  On the cover the children will draw a picture of themselves with a big smile and under their drawing write ..”I’m happy when ….”  (they can copy this from the blackboard.)

While they are preparing their covers, have a child come to the teacher’s desk, one at a time and she will ask them what makes them happy.  Then on the pages of the booklet she will write the sentences for them.
Ex.  I’m happy when I sing.         I’m happy when I draw.

I’m happy when I  dance.     I’m happy when I go shopping with my Mother.        I’m happy when I go swimming.    I’m happy when I can play in the park.

These can be used for them to draw an illustration for each sentence.

I suggest that these booklets be used for a reading practice.

It may be surprising to learn what things make them happy.  A teacher can learn a lot about her students from this simple activity.
It’s even possible for them to make another booklet , this time with the title
“I’m NOT happy when I……”

Look up a story book that makes children “happy”.
I recommend, “Too Much Noise.” by Ann McGovern.
It tells the story of a man who asks the village wise man to help him find a solution for his noisy house.  It seemed like a simple problem at the beginning but it became more and more complicated when the man finds his house full of farm animals, including a donkey, sheep  and a cow.  The solution is very ingenious and the children will definitely enjoy the ending.

A Nice Thought
“The principal purpose of being 6 is to enjoy being 6, of secondary importance is to prepare for being 7.”
