Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. This activity is for elementary school children to learn the ordinal numbers.
The teacher can list on the board the numbers from 1 to 10. Next to each she will write the ordinal number and the corresponding word.
Ex.    1 1^st first   2 2^nd second 3 3^rd third etc.
The children can copy them in their notebooks.

Activity
Have ten children line up and give each child an ordinal number
          1^st   2^nd 3^rd 4^th   …..etc.
Have another 20 children line up and give them the cards with the words:
           First, second, third, fourth etc.
To make it a game, the teacher can ring a bell or blow a whistle and the children in both groups have to find their counterparts.

A second activity.
Call the children one by one in front of the room.
Mary, you’re first. (Give the two cards, 1^st and first)
John, you’re second. Etc.

Call out “mix up!” The children have to change their positions, so now they are not in the proper order. A child will come and put them in order again.

A third activity.
The teacher will guide them in drawing objects. ( a glass, a fork, a pencil, a book, a cup etc,)  The paper can be folded into 6 parts.
In the First square, draw a dog, and write the word First under the drawing.
In the Second square, draw a cat and write the word Second under the drawing.
Use other familiar objects, one for each square. They can use the back of the paper too.
If the children are older they can add 11^th, eleventh and 12^th twelfth, since there is room.
With these older children the teacher can continue by asking them,
“What’s in the third square?” And they will answer   “In the third square, there’s a glass.”  I suggest the teacher writes the question and answer on the board as a sample for them to use in answering the other questions.

When the points we want to teach are “acted out”, we are motivating the students to remember them.
It would be nice to have a Class Calendar and every morning take a look at the date.
“What day is today? Today is Monday, March 5^th.” (March fifth)
Before creating this calendar be sure that the children are familiar with the days of the week and the months of the year.
This class calendar can be used to make note of the children’s birthdays that are celebrated that month.

The older children can include holidays, school events etc on the calendar.

Let’s not forget to talk about the weather daily too.
“Today is Monday, March 5^th (fifth). It’s sunny .”
The children can keep a Weather Diary, by adding a sentence that refers to the weather, each day.

A Nice Thought
“If you think a dog can’t count, try putting 3 dog biscuits in your pocket and give him only two!”
