Giving young children lists of vocabulary words to memorize is not exactly the best way to get your students motivated!
Children need to manipulate things, hold them in their hands and play with them! It takes some teacher preparation to do this lesson, but I believe it’s well worth it.
First of all we need a "shopping bag" for each child. If the teacher doesn’t have enough, she can ask the children to have mother give them one to bring to class.

Now we need some things for the children "to buy". We can use empty boxes of items ( cereal boxes, boxes of teabags, empty soda bottles along with photos of vegetables, fruit, can goods, etc.)
The teacher should be the first one "to shop". She’ll go around the room and pick out items she wants, saying the name of the item out loud and having the children repeat after her. Then let one child at a time takes turns shopping, and naming the items she puts into her shopping bag.
                 The other children can them ask her questions
                 Did you buy milk?   Did you buy cereal?   Did you buy cookies? Etc.
                 "The shopper", will answer. Yes, I did, No I didn’t.

If there is a large class, I suggest dividing the class into groups. It will be easier for the teacher to follow them.

The other groups can draw pictures of their favourite foods or a picture entitled "Mother and I at the supermarket".

If the class is a bit older, the teacher can collect supermarket publicity and let the children use them to cut out items they would like to buy.

Still an other idea is to have them put the food into categories:
Food for breakfast Food for lunch Food for dinner
With this idea, children can work in groups and make charts . Later with the help of teacher they can label all the food they found.

They can also learn new vocabulary words:
a supermarket cart a supermarket basket
the cashier Entrance Exit Cash Credit Card
