Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. Children always have the desire to “help mother”, and we can let them do just that…. in English!!

Let’s set the table!

The teacher introduces the objects for setting the table:
Plate, knife, fork, spoon, napkin, glass.

She’ll show them how to position each of them on the table.
Now they can draw with the teacher’s guidance. (Have cardboard circles ready for them to trace around for a nice dinner plate!)
As the teacher instructs them to draw a plate, she too will draw it on the blackboard. Then a fork, knife etc. When the children have finished they can “decorate” their dinner plate.
It would be a good idea if the teacher could find some table setting photos in magazines. She could give one to each children and they will label the items in the photos.They can then keep colourful photo next to the drawing they made.

Let’s hang out the clothes to dry!

Here the children are given a photocopy with a drawing of a clothesline.
The teacher introduces pictures of different items to be hung on the line.
Ex. Socks, jeans, a t-shirt, an apron, a shirt, a skirt, a towel

She’ll instruct them to draw a item at a time to be hung on the clothesline.
While she calls out an item, she’ll also draw it on the blackboard clothesline. When the children have finished they can colour the items as they wish.

Let’s bake an apple pie!

The teacher has photos of ingredients some appropriate for an apple cake, and some not. The children as they see each ingredient will decide what they need to make the apple cake.
Ex. Flour, an onion, sugar, butter, a tomato, a carrot, apples, pepper,
baking powder, a potato, an orange.

When they have decided on the proper ingredients, then they can draw an apple pie and list the ingredients that the teacher has written on the blackboard; flour, sugar, butter, baking powder, apples.
Then the teacher can show them photos of where they should or shouldn’t put the apple pie.
Ex. In the refrigerator, in the freezer, in the oven, in the closet

Children love to show that they know when something is “silly”.
They’d laugh about putting a tomato in an apple pie!!!
