Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. All holidays have their traditions and children should be able to celebrate and learn more about them in class with their classmates and teacher.

Halloween is a very well-known holiday that children love. On October 31^st, they can dress up in costumes and go “trick or treating” from house-to-house for goodies!!
The teacher can find a “mask” form (orange!) with holes for eyes, and each child can decorate one with Halloween drawings and words. Ex. Pumpkin, witch, moon, black cat, ghost etc

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is typically American. It’s a day to give thanks to God for all we have. People celebrate by having a delicious dinner with a roast turkey.
The teacher can find a simple “turkey” form to colour and then they can paste them on poster paper. They will be a cheerful decoration for the classroom. Then they can write a “Happy Thanksgiving” card, decorating it with a drawing of a turkey!
I like to teach them a little rhyme too.
             Thank for the world so sweet
             Thank you for the food we eat.
             Thank you for the birds that sing.
             Thank you God, for everything!

Of course, Christmas needs very little introduction. There is a wide variety of decorations they can make. Have them write the name of the decoration next to the drawing. Example: Santa Clause, Christmas tree, Christmas stable, candles, angels. Etc.
The teacher can prepare photocopies of short Christmas songs. The most popular is Jingle Bells! They can each label a Christmas photo and even write a sentence for it. Don’t forget to guide them in making a Christmas card writing, “Merry Christmas” as a greeting.

Saint Valentine’s Day on February 14^th is dedicated to “hearts and flowers”.
They can trace different size hearts to use when making a Valentine’s Day card, complete with the greeting, “Happy Saint Valentine’s Day”.

When it’s Easter, the teacher can talk about Easter “bunnies” and colourful Easter eggs. Here again we need drawings to colour and label, and Easter cards to make!Celebrating all these holidays (not forgetting Mother’s Day and Father’s Day!) increases the children’s awareness of these “special days” and their significance.
