Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. I always find that children like to DO things. They can listen to a certain extent and then if they are not asked to participate in some way, the attention wanders.
Doing something with their hands, means creating something. This of course means they are giving something of themselves in this “creation”.

Making bookmarks

The teacher can prepare strips of poster paper just the right size for a child’s bookmark.
There are some suggestions:
Let them decorate their bookmarks with images and then words in English.
They can use both sides of the bookmark so it is adaptable for sets of words.
Ex….On one side   they can draw a sun and write Good Morning
         On the opposite side, draw the moon and stars and write Good Night

          ...write Hello and the other side Goodbye

...draw a child and the words in a “balloon”, “How are you?”
And the other side “I’m fine, thank you and you?”.

...draw an arrow pointing upwards and the word UP
The other side an arrow pointing downwards and the word DOWN

...draw a sun and write It’s sunny
Draw clouds and rain and write It’s raining

...draw a smiling face and write I’m HAPPY
Draw a sad face and write I’m SAD

The children will want to make more than one, and maybe they will have their own ideas as to what to draw.

The more creative activity a child does while learning English, the better.
They will surely want to bring these bookmarks home to show their parents. And this sharing and being proud of what they’re learning, is a great learning motivation.
