Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. Children love to play games. The teacher can take advantage of this when teaching them English!
Many word games can be transformed into Box Games.

Here the children can help you make up the materials for the game. (this again is a learning situation.) Hand out pictures (from internet or magazines) and have the children cut them out and paste them on cardboard. (Use backs of cereal boxes…saves money!) then they can bring their pictures to the teacher and she will write on the back of each one the name of the object, person, place or colour.
Now all the pictures are put into a shoebox. The children can work in groups of 3 or 4. they have to close their eyes and then pick out a picture card from the box.
If they know the word, they can keep the card. If they don’t know the word they can turn it over to see the word and then put it back into the box. The child who can collect the most cards is the winner.
A variation of this game can be whenever they make a mistake in identifying a word, they have to put all the cards they had acquired back into the box, to start over again. (You will hear a lot of moans and groans when that happens!)
This will keep them interested as they will surely want to be the winner.

Still another Box game.
The teacher will write a number on each card, from 1 to 100. (Obviously the teacher will have already introduced these numbers)
She will put them into a box and the children will have to pick out a number card and say the number correctly. If he knows the number he can keep it.
At the end of the game whoever has the most number cards, wins.

Many variations can be used.
For example, have cards which show people’s occupations
Mailman, policeman, dentist, doctor, teacher, artist, photographer etc.
Another set of cards can show items of clothing
A shirt, a pair of jeans, a jacket, a coat, a hat, gloves, a belt etc.
Also sets with days of the week and months of the year.
Here when they pick a card they have to pronounce it correctly and say if it’s a day of the week or a month of the year.

There can be so many ways these “Box Games” cane be used to reinforce basic vocabulary words. The teacher needs a bit of creativity that will certainly give good results.
