Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. A teacher is the “class animator”, always ready to “perform”, to keep her students’ attention.

Here is a good listening activity.

It’s a fact that children love to imitate, so the teacher can prepare a number of actions accompanied by short commands that the children repeat.
Ex: Putting her finger on her lips……..”Quiet, please!”
       Touching her ears………………… “Listen, please!”
        Motion with her hands…………… “Stand up. Please!”
                                                                 “Sit down, please!”
        Holding up a story book………….. “Story Time!”

It can be a game if the teacher chooses one of the children to mimic the commands and the rest of the class follows the command and then they will say it out loud.

Another “listening and action” activity.

Play a CD of marching music and have the children march in line around the classroom. The teacher gives commands demonstrating the action and the children have to mimic her.

Some actions:      Hands Up                            Cover your ears
                              Hands Down.                      Cover your mouth
                              Hands on your head         Touch your nose
                              Wave your hand                 Clap your hands

This activity helps them learn the parts of a body.

The teacher points to a certain part of the body and calls out its name.

Head arm foot ears eyes nose
Hand leg knee

The children do the same and repeat the name. The teacher can start out saying the names slowly and then gradually go faster.

These are short “listening and repeating” activities that are best done very often. More than likely, the children will ask to do them!
