We sometimes forget the capabilities of young children. They are so alert to new things and what’s going on, that it’s a pleasure to be in their company. When we teach young children English we must remember that the main objective is communicating. Children love to talk. They are generally bursting with things to say. We should take advantage of this when we teach them.
Simple activities
can promote simple conversations. The next child answers. “You’re..(Mary)” Then he in turn asks the Who question. Next step is to use pictures of people, mother, father, doctor etc. The teacher holds up the picture and asks, “Who am I?” and the student answers, “You’re a mother.” Of course the picture cards should be reviewed ahead of time so that the children already are accustomed to the name words that will be used in the activity. Another activity could be Going Shopping. Place objects with price cards “in the Store”, ( a table set aside with objects like, a book, a pencil, a ruler, an eraser), and then guide the shoppers.
Shopper: “I want to buy a pencil.” This is a very basic dialogue. It can be made more complete by adding other expressions.
Ex. Salesperson:
“Come again.” The shopper can ask for more objects. The salesperson then answers “Here they are”. This all depends on the age group you’re working with and their knowledge of vocabulary and expressions. It’s ideal to have them work in small groups with the teacher’s guidance. Still another conversation activity for older children. Have pictures available

answer: Activities that stimulate conversation are extremely useful and the children will soon discover that they are capable of expressing themselves in English. Just for a laugh.
