Small groups for
learning
britannico, americano, australiano, scozzese o indiano!
I advise that the teacher
works with children in small groups. 1) The student’s attention isn’t distracted as easily. 2) The teacher has the opportunity to make each student in the group participate. 3) The teacher has more control over the teaching situation 4) The student who is shy has more of an opportunity to express himself. 5) The teacher can evaluate the students’ progress much better. How, you may ask , do you work in a small group when you have a class of 20 students! The key to this is ….keep “the others” occupied. While you’re working with a group, the others can draw a picture. You can have them draw something about a story you read to the class, or about a birthday party or an outing with their family. You can have them cut out pictures they like from old magazines. (Mothers can be asked to bring to class all the old magazines they have at home!) You can tell them to find photos of children, animals, families, rooms of a house. If the children are a bit older they can use these photos for a collage. They can also paste “people” figures on cardboard to be used in other lessons. Please note that all group lessons should be kept “short and sweet”. Decide on an objective and then a brief activity. Don’t forget too that all the students will have a chance to work in a small group with the teacher. Some short activities; As a teacher you will know how to vary the material according to your students’ level. A Nice Thought
