Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. When I think about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s experience with a class of small children that ended up in pure chaos, (from the film, “Un Poliziotto alle Elementari”) I believe any teacher would shutter to think of having a similar situation.
Children can be angels…..at times. But unfortunately, not all the time!
They are energy in its purest form. Sitting still for long periods is definitely Not easy for them.

How does one teacher keep her class of little ones under control?
First of all, Don’t get into the habit of raising your voice. (At least if you intend to get home with any voice at all!) Another reason is that they will out shout you!
Keep your eye on the super active students and keep them occupied. Choose them as your helpers:
Mr. Clean Up Man…..will pass with the wastepaper basket to in sure a clean room.
Miss Blackboard Helper…..will erase the blackboard when needed and make sure that there are pieces of chalk ready for the teacher to use.
Mr. Call Attention….will be allowed (when asked by the teacher!) to clap his hands to call for attention.
These “jobs” can be rotated among the other students as well.

It’s also helpful to give the students some “class directions.”
1)   When you want them all to listen
     Hold up your arms and wave them.
     The children will know it’s time to stop talking and listen to the teacher. They can       even imitate her by holding up their arms too!

2)       Sing… and they will sing with you
      This keeps the class “together”. Begin teaching short and catchy songs and build up a “repertory”. These will come in handy, especially whey they get over excited, or maybe just a bit down because it’s a gloomy rainy day.

3) Poems to be recited together.
Same reasons as above. The more poems and rhymes they know, the larger the variety of vocabulary words they become acquainted with.

If possible organize your seating plan so that the students all face you. I particularly like the “horseshoe” arrangement of desks because all their sunny little faces are visible and there is space to walk around without obstacles. Some good advice: have the lively ones sit near the teacher.

Remember to keep a happy “atmosphere” in the classroom.
Greet each child with a smile.
Show them that you are genuinely happy to see them and can’t wait to teach them!

Children “sense” attitudes. If you are sincere, they know it!

These are just a few suggestions and ideas, as an enthusiastic teacher you’ll soon invent new ways. Remember, if it works, use it!!
