Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. As any teacher of young children knows, children need new experiences, specifically those geared to their age level.

We cannot teach a five-year-old expecting him to learn like one who is already six. Every month that passes, a child acquires new skills, manual as well as intellectual. As teachers we need to become aware of these “growing” traits. In every class there is sure to be children with an age difference of at least 4 or 5 months. It’ll be necessary to do some individual work for those who require it.

Here are some tips that may be useful.

1)     Take the time to observe your students to see how they react to their classmates,  class routine and discipline.

2)     Keep your eye on the “timid” ones who will surely need words of encouragement.

3)     Try not to give long “talks” in English. Give short and simple instructions if they are    playing a game.

Ex. Let’s sit in a circle.
       All together.
        Raise your hand.
         Your turn……etc.

4)     Let them help you make “lesson” materials. They can cut out and paste photos (that you select for them!) on cardboard, to be used for labelling and recognizing words, actions, colours…

5)     Discover who are the “older” students who have a longer attention span. They can take turns being “teacher’s assistants”.

6)     When talking to the students be careful not to use “difficult” words they cannot understand. Gradually as they acquire a larger vocabulary, new words can be introduced when teaching.

7)     Have a wide variety of materials available for the children to handle. Stimulate them to create. This can be done by telling them a story and having them draw a picture about it. Depending again on the age level and writing capacities, the teacher can have them write simple captions for their pictures. Here of course, the teacher has to work individually with her students.

It’s not the easiest of jobs to teach young children English, but it’s definitely possible as long as the teacher is enthusiastic and willing to work.
