Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. Children basically love to draw and have their drawings put on display.
The teacher can guide them by giving them the following instructions.

“Draw a car. Draw a man next to the car. Draw a cat next to the man.
Draw a sun in the sky. Draw 2 small clouds next to the sun.

“Draw a house. Draw a family next to the house. Draw a sun in the sky.
Draw 2 big clouds in the sky.

“Draw a little girl. Draw a dog next to the girl. Draw a doghouse next to a tree.
Draw a bird in the tree.

As the teacher asks the children to draw, she can draw along with them, on the blackboard.
When they are finished drawing they can label what they drew
Example: Write the word car, next to the car.
Write the word man, next to the man. Etc.

A class project can be to create a Picture Dictionary .

The teacher can prepare the drawing paper by folding it into 4 parts, with the words already clearly written in each square. She can use each page for a different series of related words.
Ex:   PLACES    a house, a school, a hotel, a farm
         FRUIT      an apple, a pear, a banana, an orange
         TOYS         a doll, a ball, a game, a puzzle

Don’t forget that children are very creative. Let’s give them a chance to show what they are capable of doing!

I’d give them the following geometric shapes on cardboard; a circle, a square and a triangle. They can trace around them, placing them all over the page as a design . Then the teacher will say “Colour all the circles RED; all the squares BLUE; and all the triangles YELLOW. (The teacher will demonstrate on her drawing paper)
When they are finished they’ll have created a contemporary art design, “kid style”.
