Dopo il blog di supporto a tutti gli insegnanti di inglese che lavorano con ragazzi della scuola media, la nostra Elaine si rivolge ora in questa serie speciale a chi insegna ai bambini. Come al solito, le "lezioni" di Elaine sono ricche di idee e di consigli pratici che riusciranno certamente a rendere più gradevole ai bambini l'insegnamento dell'inglese. We know that children have to be stimulated to use the English language, even at an early age.

Once they learn the verb “to be” and the short answers, they are able to actively participate in the lessons.

                                                          “Find Me”

The teacher has to prepare a chart with photos for each of the following.
At school           at home                     at the supermarket
At the library     at the book shop      at the pharmacy

Under each “location”, she can create a pocket (you can use an envelope) where she can “hide” the following “people” photos.
Ex: mother father Mr. Brown Mrs. Green Grandmother Tommy

The teacher can demonstrate what she wants the children to do.
Is mother at the supermarket? She will look “in the pocket” before answering.
“Yes, she is”. Or “No, she isn’t”
Is Mr. Brown at the book shop?
“Yes, he is” or “No, he isn’t”

When the activity is finished (by elimination!) the teacher can mix up the photos and hide them again.
An other activity...
Prepare photos of…a policeman a doctor a woman a girl
a boy a mailman a teacher a student

Teacher can then ask the students one at a time (have them choose the photo)
“Are you a policeman? Student answers “No, I’m not”
“Are you a student? Student answers “Yes, I am”.

For a “twist”, the teacher can distribute 2 cards each with the words
“Yes, I am” "No, I’m not” The students can hold up the correct card as they say it out loud.

This can be a “fun” way of teaching the short answers and of course they can be varied to use other forms “Yes, she is. No, she isn’t”…. Yes, he is, No he isn’t”.

The main object of this lesson is to get the students talking and understanding the use of these short answers.
